Spartans Run Streak to 16 with 8-1 Win over Denison

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team picked up its 16th-consecutive victory with a 8-1 win over Denison University at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield Village, Ohio on Sunday night.

CWRU improved to 3-0 this season with the win, while Denison dropped to 0-1 on the campaign with the season-opening loss.

The Spartans' no. 1 doubles duo of sophomore James Hopper and senior Matthew Chen got the Spartans off to a strong start, picking up an 8-2 win over Jack Bulger and Marc-Lennart Harms. Denison evened the team score at 1-1, as Tim Cianciola and Patrick McGuigan bested seniors Neil Mabee and Anthony Kanam in a tiebreak at second doubles, 8-7. However, senior Jonathan Powell and junior Chaitanya Aduru put the Spartans back in front, pulling out an 8-6 win over Andy Mackler and Milan Gonela at third doubles.

The Spartans would go on to win each of the six singles matches. Four of the six wins came in straight sets, as first-year Vishwa Aduru bested Harms 6-0, 6-2 in the second singles match, Powell claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jacob Dennen at no. 4 singles, Chaitanya Aduru picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mackler at fifth singles, and Kanam secured a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Gonela at no. 6 singles.

In the first singles match, Hopper claimed a three-set win over Cianciola, 6-7, 6-2, 11-9, while Chen topped Bugler in the third singles match, 6-2, 6-7, 10-6.

The Spartans are scheduled to return to action on Friday, March 26 at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club with a noon match against the University of Northwestern Ohio.
