The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team notched its second-straight 9-0 win to open the 2021 campaign, defeating Wittenberg University 9-0 on Saturday night at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield Village, Ohio.

The win raises the Spartans' record to 2-0 on the year, and comes in the team's first match against a Division III opponent this season. With the victory, CWRU has now won 15-straight matches dating back to last season. Wittenberg dropped to 0-1 on the campaign with the loss.

CWRU rolled through its doubles matches, with sophomore James Hopper and senior Matthew Chen winning 8-1 at no. 1 doubles over John DeVito and Jake Stockhausen, junior Chaitanya Aduru and senior Jonathan Powell claiming an 8-0 win over Hayden Durant and Joe Patton at no. 2 doubles, and seniors Anthony Kanam and Neil Mabee securing an 8-2 win over Guille Del Rio Gonzalez and Kyle Fout at no. 3 doubles.

The Spartans would go on to win all six singles matches in straight sets. Chaitanya Aduru would extend the team's lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fout at no. 5 singles, while Kanam locked in the team win for CWRU with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Roy Jensen at no. 6 singles.

At fourth singles, Chen extended the Spartans' lead further with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Patton, and first-year Vishwa Aduru bested Stockhausen 6-1, 6-0 at second singles to put CWRU up 7-0. Completing the sweep were Powell at third singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Del Rio Gonzalez and Hopper at first singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Devito.

With his singles win, Kanam moved into sole possession of third place in team history with 76 singles victories over his career. He is now eight behind Will Drougas for the second-most in team history.

The Spartans will be back in action tomorrow with a key in-state matchup, hosting Denison University at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club at 5:30 p.m.
