The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team kicked off its 2021 campaign in dominant fashion on Sunday afternoon, claiming a 9-0 win over the University of Findlay, an NCAA Division II program, at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield Village, Ohio.
The match was the first for the Spartans since March 11, 2020, as the team extended its winning streak to 14-straight matches. Findlay dropped to 3-2 with the loss.
In doubles play, the duo of seniors Jonathan Powell and Matthew Chen claimed an 8-3 win over Jorge Barnuevo and Alfredo Berlanga in the no. 1 doubles match. At no. 2 doubles, seniors Neil Mabee and Anthony Kanam bested Octavio Carrasco and Andrew Codita 8-2. First-years Vishwa Aduru and Sahil Dayal extended the team's lead to 3-0 with an 8-7 win over Florian Bauer and Mark Ivanov at no. 3 doubles.
Powell put the Spartans ahead 4-0 with a win at no. 1 singles, leading 6-2, 2-0 when his opponent, Barnuevo, retired. Sophomore Diego Maza locked up the team victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ivanov in the sixth singles match.
Junior Chaitanya Aduru followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at no. 3 singles, and Kanam bested Codita at no. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Rounding out the victory, both Dayal and Vishwa Aduru earned their first collegiate singles victories, with the former winning 6-2, 6-2 over Carrasco in the fifth singles match, and the latter securing a 6-3, 7-5 win at no. 2 singles over Bauer.
With his singles victory, Kanam moved into a tie with former Spartan Eric Klawitter (2020-14) for third in program history with 75 career singles wins.
Next up for the Spartans is a doubleheader against Franciscan University, scheduled for next Saturday, March 20 at 12:30 p.m.
