Case Western Reserve University sophomore Ethan Chuang recorded a NCAA 'B' cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke, while also setting a school record in the event during the second day of competition at the Magnus Cup Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State University.
Chuang paced the squad in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing fourth in the event with a 'B' cut and school record time of 55.77. That time bested the previous school record of 56.35 set by former Spartan Sean Nickley in 2014. First-year Jiro Batt placed ninth in the event with a time of 57.47, while top 'B' final finishers for the Spartan men were junior Patrick Cavanaugh (12th, 58.11), first-year Jasha Heide (12th, 58.11) and sophomore Ben Zuo (14th, 58.18).
The men also had strong performances in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
In the 400 IM, the 'A' final finishers were first-year Peter Meng (7th, 4:02.03) and senior Ryan Gorman (9th, 4:09.07), while the 'B' final finishers were first-year Kevin Hu (13th, 4:08.96), sophomore Hunter Forsythe (15th, 4:12.19) and first-year Anthony Colangelo (19th, 4:16.33). In the 100-yard butterfly, the 'A' final finisher was junior Anatole Borisov (10th, 50.07 in the prelims), and 'B' final finishers were Zuo (13th, 50.41), first-year Jackson Pollard (15t, 50.57 in the prelims), first-year Cole Davin (19th, 51.49 in the prelims) and sophomore Joshua Lee (20th, 51.63 in the prelims).
In the men's 200 Free, 'A' final finishers were junior Andrew Smith (9th, 1:40.46 in the prelims) and first-year Stephen Hogeman (10th, 1:42.21 in the prelims, while 'B' final finishers were junior Xander Guerrero (14th, 1:42.67 in the prelims) and junior Campbell Patterson (18th, 1:45.11). In the 100 Back, 'B' final finishers were junior Connor Chignell (11th, 51.86), senior Michael Clough (12th, 52.19 in the prelims), senior Ryan Gilbert (14th, 53.23 in the prelims), senior Kelvin Tay (18th, 52.83 in the prelims) and first-year Austin Sung (19th, 54.24 in the prelims).
In addition, the men's 200-yard medley relay team of Clough, Chuang, Borisov and Patterson placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:32.54, while the men's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Meng, Guerrero, Smith and Hogeman finished seventh in the event with a time of 6:57.53.
For the women, first-year Isabel Verheyen earned a 13th-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:30.81, while junior Abby Halsdorfer placed 18th (4:34.76) and junior Maria Pritchett finished 19th (4:32.49 in the prelims).
Other finishers for the Spartan women were first-year Kate Menzer in the 100-yard butterfly (20th, 57.22 in the prelims), and first-year Erica Rice (20th, 57.57) and first-year Simone Vale (27th, 58.52 in the prelims) in the 100-yard backstroke.
In addition, the women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Halsdorfer, Pritchett, first-year Angeli Paull and first-year Gabriella Chambers placed 11th in the event with a time of 7:43.25.
With most of the competition consisting of NCAA Division I and II schools, the men have scored 613 points through the two days to sit in third place and the women have totaled 138 points to sit in ninth place at the invite.
Action at the Magnus Cup Invitational will conclude on Saturday, with preliminaries starting at 9:00 a.m., and finals at 5:00 p.m. In addition, the CWRU divers will wrap up competition at the CMU Diving Invitational on Saturday, with action scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. Full results and a recap of Saturday's events will be posted to athletics.case.edu at the conclusion of each meet.
