#29 Spartan Women Split Against #3 Amherst and Austin

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team, ranked 29th in Division III, wrapped up the final day of competition in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday, falling 8-1 to third-ranked Amherst College in the early match, but defeating Austin College 8-1 in the second match of the day.

The Spartans' lone win during the early match came at first singles, where sophomore Madeleine Paolucci defeated Amherst's Camille Smukler 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 10-7.

The loss was the fourth for the Spartans, who fell to 4-4 overall in 2019. The Mammoths improved to 5-0 overall with the win.

In the second match of the day against Austin, the Spartans claimed wins in two of the three doubles matches to a take a 2-1 lead over the Roos'. Claiming wins for the Spartans were the No. 2 doubles duo of freshmen Sneha Karnam and Eliza Georgiades, 8-2 over Georgia Moore and Anna Sergiovanni, and the no. 3 doubles duo of freshmen Shreyaa Mukund and Kristin Jones, 8-4 over Chandler Morris and Katie Seibert. CWRU's lone doubles setback in the match came in the first match, with Paolucci and sophomore Mira Amin falling 8-5 to Melody Duong and Diana Carvajalino.

Karnam defeated Carvajalino at second singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The Spartans next win came by Paolucci at first singles, as she defeated Duong 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. CWRU's next two wins came in straight sets at sixth and fourth singles. Georgiades picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Seibert at sixth singles, and freshman Nidhi Jha claimed a 6-2, 6-2 over Morris at fourth singles. The Spartans closed out the victory with a win at third singles as Amin defeated Sergiovanni 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, and at fifth singles as Mukund defeated Moore 6-2, 6-2.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-4 on the campaign, while Austin dropped to 4-2 on the season.

After two weeks off from competition, Case Western Reserve will resume their spring schedule at 21st-ranked Kenyon College on Friday, March 29th at 5:00 p.m.
