No. 17 CWRU Women's Tennis Sweeps on Second Day of Spring Break Trip

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team picked up two wins on their second day of matches during their Spring Break trip in Florida. The Spartans topped Swarthmore College 9-0 and 37th-ranked East Texas Baptist University 8-1 in Orlando at the USTA Tennis Center on Tuesday.

With the wins, the Spartans improved to 9-2 overall on the season.

In the first match of the day against Swarthmore, the Spartans got off to a quick start by sweeping the three doubles matches. At first doubles, senior Nithya Kanagasegar and freshman Madeleine Paolucci defeated Emma Kassan and Anna Scheibmeir 9-8 (8-6), while senior Peyton Young and freshman Nicole Cardwell claimed an 8-5 victory over Shirline Wee and Julia Gokhberg in the second doubles match. Senior Nina Cepeda and junior Jessica Liu rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win in the third doubles contest over Maria Cuervo and Ashley Gao.

In singles action, Kanagasegar bested Wee at first singles 4-6, 6-0, 11-6 and Paolucci claimed a 6-0, 4-6, 13-11 victory over Gokhberg at second singles. Also claiming singles wins for the Spartans were freshman Mira Amin at third singles 6-3, 6-1 over Arya Jemal, Liu at fourth singles 7-5, 6-1 over Scheibmeir, Young won by retirement over Cuervo at fifth singles, and Cepeda at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Audrey Haring.

Swarthmore dropped to 0-3 with Tuesday's loss to the Spartans.

CWRU got off to a hot start in their second match of the day with a sweep of the three doubles contests. The Spartans' due of Kanagasegar and Paolucci defeated Elisa Kendall and Tess Willis 8-3 at first doubles. Case Western Reserve claimed an 8-1 victory at second doubles, with Cepeda and Liu defeating Ashley Schenck and Kaleight Smith, and also an 8-4 win at third doubles, with Young and Cardwell picking up a win over Jabree McClaine and Mullika Seekhieo.

Kanagasegar defeated Willis at first singles 6-2, 6-3. The Spartans next two wins came in straight sets at third and fourth singles. Amin picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Smith at third singles, and Young claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Seekhieo in the fourth match. Rounding out the slate of victories for the Spartans were Cepeda over McClaine 6-3, 6-1 at fifth singles, and sophomore Katrin Gurvich 6-0, 6-1 over Schenck in the sixth singles match. Paolucci took the lone loss of the match for the Spartans, losing to Kendall in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action this weekend at the Blue-Grey Invitational, hosted by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Spartans will open play at the event against Bates College on Friday, March 16th at 12:00 p.m.
