REDLANDS, Calif. – The No. 26 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team fell short in an upset bid of No. 7 Bowdoin College (Maine) by a score of 6-3 during the first day of its spring break trip on the west coast.
Freshman Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) led the Spartans (4-3) with wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles.
The Spartans grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles with victories in the first two pairings. At first doubles, sophomore Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) and junior Marianne Bonanno (Claymont, Ohio/Northmont) defeated Emma Chow and Joulia Likhanskaia, 8-6. On the second court, sophomore Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) and Berchuck also won 8-6 over Kate Winingham and Pilar Giffening.
In singles play, Bowdoin (1-0) grabbed five-of-six possible points. Berchuck was the sole Spartan victor with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Giffening at No. 5.
CWRU is back inaction tomorrow (Tuesday, March 11) versus University Athletic Association foe, the University of Rochester (N.Y.), at 3:00 p.m. CT.
