No. 25 Spartan Women Open Spring Season with Wins versus IUP and Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio –  Sophomore Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) went a combined 4-0, and the No. 25 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of the 2013-14 schedule with wins versus NCAA Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania and regional-rival Oberlin College at John W. Heisman Field House.

The Spartans (2-0) won a marathon first match versus IUP, 5-4, as the two teams dueled for nearly six hours. In their second match of the day, the Spartans clipped Oberlin, 6-3.

In the match with IUP (2-1), the two teams were tied at four points apiece when freshman Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) won a third-set tiebreaker versus Alanna McFail by scores of 6-2, 6-7, 10-8.  

The score reached that point after the Spartans won twice in doubles (No. 2 and No. 3) and twice in singles (No. 4 and No. 5).

Along with Berchuck, sophomore Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) was 2-0 for the match. The two teamed to win 8-5 at No. 2 doubles versus Sophie Butland and Erika Schnaas. Khadilkar then won her singles match in straight-sets (6-3, 6-3) versus Ranvita Mahto at No. 5. In addition, Djohan won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 versus Schnaas and teamed with classmate Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) for an 8-3 victory at No. 3.

Versus Oberlin (1-2), the Spartans once again built a 2-1 lead in doubles play. Khadilkar was the first to finish in singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory versus Emma Brezel at No. 4, and Djohan followed by the same scores versus Erin Johnson at No. 3. After the Yeowomen picked up a point at No. 1, the Spartans clinched the match with a Sweeney win at No. 2 versus Grace Porter (7-5, 6-2).

The Spartans return to action next Sunday, February 16 at 12:00 p.m. at Kenyon College.
