Spartan Women Open Spring with Wins Versus St. Mary's and ONU

EASTLAKE, Ohio – The No. 7 regionally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team began the spring portion of its 2013 schedule with a 9-0 victory versus St. Mary's College (Ind.) and an 8-1 win versus No. 14 regionally-ranked Ohio Northern University on Saturday at One Wellness Sports and Health.

With the victories, the Spartans improve to a perfect 4-0 in dual matches this season.

Against St. Mary's (0-1), the Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 advantage following doubles action. The No. 1 tandem of senior Erika Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and freshman Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) won by an 8-2 count versus Mary Catherine Faller and Kayle Sexton. The No. 2 regionally-ranked duo of freshman Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) and senior captain Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) were victorious by an 8-4 tally, while the No. 3 team of sophomore Alexandra Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and senior Emily Pham (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) cruised to an 8-0 win.

In singles action, the Spartans claimed all six points highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 victory from freshman Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) at No. 3 over St. Mary's Shannon Elliott.

Versus Ohio Northern, who drops to 6-1 overall at No. 14 in the Central region, the Spartans once again swept all three points in doubles. During doubles, Erika Lim and Zargham were an 8-2 winner at No. 1, while the tandems of Alexandra Lim and Pham at No. 2 along with Evers and Khadilkar at No. 3 were victorious by scores of 8-0 and 9-7, respectively.

In singles, Erika Lim was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 1 versus Michelle Tuma, while Zargham, the region's No. 4 ranked singles player, swept her opponent by a 6-2, 6-4 tally at No. 2. Sweeney, ranked No. 22 regionally, was a 7-5, 6-2 winner at No. 3, while the Polar Bears grabbed their lone point of the match at No. 4.

Alexandra Lim claimed a three-set victory at No. 5, while sophomore Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) rounded out the Spartan scoring at No. 6 via a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Case has a week off from competition before returning to the court on Saturday, February 16 at Kalamazoo College (Mich.) at 4:00 p.m.
