Spartan Women's Tennis Notches a Pair of 8-1 Wins Versus JCU and Mount Union

EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team completed its fall season with a pair of 8-1 victories versus John Carroll University and the University of Mount Union on Friday afternoon at One Wellness Sports and Health. Both matches were moved indoors due to inclement weather.

In the day's first tilt with JCU, the Spartans (2-0) raced out to a 3-0 advantage during doubles play. The No. 1 duo of sophomore Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) and freshman Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) won 8-3; the No. 2 team of senior Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and freshman Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) were victorious by an 8-1 count; and the No. 3 tandem of freshman Kaitlin Mills (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) and sophomore Morgan Hertik (Nashville, Tenn./Ensworth) won via an 8-2 score.

In singles play, the Spartans were victorious in five of the six matches in straight sets. Sweeney won at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1), Khadilkar at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0), Evers at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2), Mills at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2) and freshman Meredith Lee (South Bend, Ind./Penn) at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3).

The second match of the day with Mount Union followed a similar script as Case earned all three doubles points.

At No. 1, Evers and freshman Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) won 8-5, sophomore Alexandra Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and Sweeney won 8-1, and freshman Lauren Rovner (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) and Lee were victorious, 8-0.

During Case's five singles wins, the Spartans picked up points from Zargham at No. 1 (6-2, 7-5), Lim at No. 2 (6-1, 6-0), freshman Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0), Rovner at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0) and sophomore Sitara Koneru (Dublin, Ohio/The Wellington School) at No. 5 (6-7, 6-1, 1-0).

The 2013 spring schedule begins on Saturday, February 9, 2013 with split squad matches versus St. Mary's College (Ind.) at home and Division II Edinboro University (Pa.) on the road.
