2026 CWRU Baseball Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team recorded its 17th consecutive season with a .500 or better record during the 2026 campaign.

Despite losing seven position players who started 20 or more games for the team in 2025, one of the most successful in program history, the Spartans were able to rebuild quickly behind a more experienced pitching staff, along with a lineup that featured several returners in elevated roles and first-years who were immediately able to step in and make an impact.

The Spartans finished the season with six wins against teams that went on to make the NCAA Tournament, five wins against teams ranked or receiving votes in the final D3baseball.com Top-25, and three wins against teams that were ranked at the time of the game. CWRU went 8-12 in University Athletic Association games, placing fifth in the final conference standings.

CWRU hit .278 as a team during the year and averaged 5.9 runs per contest. The team's 19 triples during the campaign were the second-most in a season in program history, and its 0.49 triples per game led all UAA teams and were the ninth-most in Division III. The Spartans also finished the year with 86 stolen bases, second among UAA teams and the fifth most in a season in team history.

Meanwhile, the pitching staff held opponents to a .294 batting average and recorded a 6.07 earned run average as a unit. Spartan pitchers struck out 322 batters during the campaign, the fifth-most in a season in program history, while the team's 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings were the 32nd-most in Division III during the year and second in the conference.

Junior utility player Tyler Stillson led the Spartans both at the plate and on the mound during the year, earning All-UAA Second Team acclaim following the season. Seeing action primarily as the designated hitter but also starting games at first base and in left field, Stillson batted .315 with an .862 OPS, leading CWRU in both categories, while collecting 26 runs, nine doubles, three triples, two home runs, 24 RBIs, and four stolen bases. He also made a team-high 11 starts on the mound during the year, going 4-4 with a 5.31 ERA and 76 strikeouts, the fourth-most in a campaign in the program's history.

Junior Nate Arterburn also secured an All-UAA Second Team selection, starting all 39 of the team's games at shortstop and batting .307 while pacing the squad with 29 runs and 14 stolen bases. Senior outfielder Matt Trout added a .302 average and a .848 OPS with nine doubles, five triples, two home runs, and a team-high 27 RBIs, and graduate student infielder Eli Westrick finished the campaign batting .304 with eight doubles, three triples, and 16 RBIs. Additional upperclassmen who started at least 18 games during the year for the Spartans included senior outfielder Jasiah Harris (.208, 15 RBIs), sophomore infielder Calvin Gelle (.233, 15 RBIs), and senior catcher Sean Donahue (.293, 2 HRs, 10 RBIs).

The CWRU offense also benefited from the emergence of several first-year players who had an immediate impact on the team. Infielder James O'Connor started 34 games and hit .303 with an .819 OPS and 23 RBIs, while leading the team in stolen bases. Catcher Collin Pool hit .300 over his 26 starts with one home run and 18 RBIs, while throwing out 16 of 26 would-be base stealers. Infielder Jaxon Knutson (.260, 2 HRs, 10 RBIs) and infielder Tucker Greer (.250, 14 RBIs) also saw significant time in the lineup, while outfielder Elijah Sledge (.321, 11 runs, 6 SBs) provided a spark off the bench for CWRU with his speed and defense.

Sophomore southpaw Charlie Griffith helped to anchor the Spartans' rotation, leading all starters with a 4.66 ERA while going 1-4 with one save, while senior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski started seven games and went 3-1 with a  6.26 ERA. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Eric Colgrove rounded out the rotation, making six starts and going 1-4 with an 8.70 ERA. Five other Spartan pitchers saw action in at least 10 games during the year, including sophomore lefty Jeff Radinsky (2-1, 2.93 ERA, 2 saves), junior righty Zach Barnes (3-1, 4.29 ERA, 1 save), sophomore righty Ayush Shetty (3-1, 4.73 ERA, 3 saves), sophomore righty Cody Hughes (0-2, 6.35 ERA), and sophomore righty Oliver Miller (2-0, 8.35 ERA).

Nobby's Ballpark played host to the earliest home opener in program history, as the Spartans welcomed Oswego State to Cleveland for three games on February 20 and 21. CWRU would pull off a sweep of the series to open the campaign with a 3-0 record. The Spartans added wins over Washington & Jefferson and Oberlin before heading to their annual spring break trip to Lexington, South Carolina, with a 5-2 record.

The Spartans went 4-3 in South Carolina, collecting wins over Swarthmore, Marietta, Johnson & Wales, and Mitchell, before returning to Ohio to split doubleheaders against John Carroll and 17th-ranked Mount Union prior to the start of UAA play.

CWRU split UAA series at home against Brandeis and 14th-ranked WashU, while splitting a road series at NYU. The Spartans showed a flair for the dramatic during their conference schedule, with four of their eight victories coming in the team's final at-bat. Those included a 3-2 win over Brandeis on March 28 behind a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the eighth from Stillson, an 8-7 win over UChicago on April 10, during which Westrick tied the game with a bases-loaded triple and scored the winning run on a walk-off wild pitch, an 8-7 victory in 10 innings at NYU on April 18 behind an extra-inning home run from Knutson, and a 10-inning 6-5 win over WashU on April 26 with Harris driving in the game-winning run with a walk-off single.

The Spartans won their final two games in their series against WashU and completed the campaign with an 11-10 win at John Carroll, ending their campaign on a three-game winning streak to clinch their 17th straight winning year.

In addition to the team's success on the field, several Spartans were also recognized for their academic achievements following the season. Barnes, Stankowski, Stillson, Trout, and Westrick were each named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, while Stillson went on to be named to the CSC Academic All-America Second Team for the second-straight year. Meanwhile, a total of 11 Spartans – Barnes, Colgrove, sophomore infielder Charlie Dickie, senior infielder/outfielder Thomas Downs, senior pitcher Austin McGowan, Miller, sophomore pitcher Jack Millman, sophomore pitcher Jacob Montemore, Radinsky, sophomore pitcher Anton Sabo, and Stillson – received UAA Spring All-Academic honors.
