The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University first-year Garrett Myers, a thrower on the men's track and field team, and senior Katalina Wang, a member of the women's tennis team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Wang won both of her matches as part of a 7-0 victory for the 21st-ranked Spartans over Ohio Northern on Saturday evening at the Westwood Tennis Center in Lima, Ohio. Wang and graduate student Hannah Kassaie defeated Abby Cruser and Jamie Hurst at first doubles, 6-2. At second singles, Wang took down Jenna Bell 6-2, 6-1 to give CWRU a 2-0 lead. This season, she is 19-2 in singles play and 15-7 in doubles action. The Spartans improved to 7-4 in dual matches.Â
The Spartans will host 18th-ranked Kenyon on Saturday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m.Â
Myers recorded the second-best mark in the conference in the discus throw at the Bob Kahn Invitational on Saturday in Oberlin, Ohio. Myers tossed the discus 42.82 meters to place second in the event. The mark ranks 10th in program history. This season, it is the second-best mark recorded by a University Athletic Association student-athlete and the 97th-best mark in all of Division III. Overall, CWRU won six events at the unscored meet.Â
The CWRU track and field teams will travel to Wooster, Ohio, for the Wooster Invitational hosted by the College of Wooster on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mentions
First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw (softball) picked up a win for the 17th-ranked Spartans during a 2-2 week against non-conference opponents. Alspaw appeared in every game, tossing nine innings with nine strikeouts and a 3.11 earned run average. In the team's 7-4 win over Denison on Wednesday, she pitched two innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts. On Saturday against Muksingum, Alspaw finished the first game with one and one-third scoreless hitless innings, and started and earned the win in the second contest, allowing just two runs in four and one-third innings with four strikeouts. This season, Alspaw is 3-2 with a 3.28 ERA across 32 innings and a team-leading 16 appearances. CWRU moved to 14-7 after splitting four games last week.Â
CWRU will next resume conference play on Friday, April 3 with a single game against Emory at 3 p.m.
First-year jumper Anna Callo (women's track and field) recorded a top 30 national mark at the Bob Kahn Invitational hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, on Saturday. Callo cleared 3.48 meters in the pole vault on her first attempt, placing second in the event. The mark ranks third in program history, fourth in the University Athletic Association this season, and 29th nationally in Division III during the 2026 campaign. The Spartans won six events at the unscored meet.
Sophomore pitcher Charlie Griffith (baseball) helped the Spartans best Brandeis University 3-2 with seven solid innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Griffith allowed just one earned run (two total) on five hits without walking a batter and struck out a career-high nine batters in the no-decision. After allowing a run in the third, he closed out his day with four shutout innings, retiring 10 consecutive Brandeis hitters between the third and seventh innings. Griffith has made six starts for the Spartans, going 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 28 and two-third innings of work. The Spartans stand at 13-9 overall with a 2-2 University Athletic Association record.
The Spartans will continue UAA play this weekend, traveling to Atlanta for a four-game series against Emory University. The two teams are scheduled to begin play on Friday, April 3, at 3 p.m.
Junior Trey Lambright (men's tennis) helped the sixth-ranked Spartans clinch the doubles point during the team's 6-1 loss to 12th-ranked Emory on Saturday. Lambright teamed with graduate student Bryce Ware to claim a 6-3 win over Ruilin Feng and Ajay Karthik at no. 1 doubles, which secured the doubles point for CWRU. It marked the third time this season that the duo has clinched the doubles point for the Spartans. Lambright improved to 16-6 in doubles matches this season, including a 9-5 mark as a part of the Spartans' no. 1 doubles pair. The Spartans stand at 19-5 overall this season.
The Spartans will be back in action this weekend with three matches, facing 14th-ranked Kenyon College on Friday, April 3, at noon in Oberlin, Ohio, and RIT twice on Saturday, April 4, at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland.
Sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller (softball) had a .400 batting average for the 17th-ranked Spartans during their 2-2 non-conference week. Miller went four-for-10 at the plate with a .500 on-base percentage and .900 OPS. She drove in three runs and scored a team-high four times, walking once. She started the week with a two-for-three performance with two runs scored and an RBI in a 7-4 win over Denison on Wednesday, reaching base in the second game of the doubleheader with a walk. On Saturday against Muskingum in New Concord, Ohio, Miller had two hits in two games, driving in two runs and scoring twice. This season, she is batting .288 with 11 runs scored and 10 runs batted in.Â
First-year infielder/outfielder James O'Connor (baseball) hit .500 (six-for-12) with a .750 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage during the team's four-game series with Brandeis University last weekend. O'Connor scored two runs with a double, a triple, two walks, and stole seven bases on as many attempts. Highlights from his weekend included a three-for-four performance with a run scored and two stolen bases in a 2-1 win on Saturday, and a two-for-five showing with a stolen base and a double in an 8-2 loss on Sunday. O'Connor is batting .303 this season with 15 RBIs and 10 stolen bases on as many attempts this year.Â
First-year sprinter Gianna Phipps (women's track and field) set a school record and recorded a pair of top 100 times in her first outdoor meet of the season, the Bob Kahn Invitational hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Phipps won both the 200 and 400-meter dashes at the meet. In the shorter race, she broke the program record with a time of 25.73 seconds, which ranks 60th nationally and fifth in the UAA. In the longer race, Phipps ran a time of 59.44 seconds, the 85th-best mark in the country. The Spartans won six events at the unscored meet.
