The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Micah Rossen, a midfielder on the men's soccer team, and first-year Maya Zarow, an outside hitter on the volleyball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Rossen scored four times for the Spartans during the team's 3-0-0 week, finding the back of the net in each contest for CWRU. Rossen started the week with a goal in the team's 4-0 road win over Oberlin on Tuesday night, leading the squad with five shots, including three on goal, in just 53 minutes of play. He doubled the team's lead to 2-0 in an eventual 3-0 victory over Lycoming at home on Saturday, finishing the contest with three shots on goal in 59 minutes. To close out the week, Rossen scored twice in a 3-1 home win over Allegheny on Sunday, tying the game at 1 in the eighth minute and adding the third Spartan goal in the 31st minute of play. Rossen currently leads the University Athletic Association with 14 points on a league-high six goals with two assists. CWRU remained unbeaten in 2026, improving to 6-0-0 with the three victories last week.
CWRU will continue its four-game homestand on Saturday, September 19 when the Spartans host Kenyon at 6 p.m.
Zarow led the Spartan attack during a 2-2 week for the squad, including a pair of home wins at the CWRU Quad on Friday and Saturday. Zarow totaled 49 kills across 15 sets (3.27 per set) on a .310 hitting percentage. She added 14 digs and four total blocks for 51.0 points (3.40 per set). Zarow started the week with 10 kills in a four-set loss to Baldwin Wallace, while also contributing three digs. In a sweep of Hiram on Friday, she hit .545, not making an error with 12 kills in 22 attacks. The following day, Zarow had 15 kills in a four-set win over Allegheny, and she put down 12 kills in a four-set loss to Colorado College. This season, she is averaging 3.62 kills (105 total) and 3.83 points (111.0 total) per set. CWRU moved to 4-4 with the .500 week.
The Spartans will make the short trek to Oberlin, Ohio, for a midweek non-conference matchup against Oberlin College. Action begins on Wednesday, September 16 at 7 p.m.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mentions
Junior setter Avery Basinger (volleyball) directed the Spartan attack during the team's 2-2 week, including a pair of home wins at the CWRU Quad on Friday and Saturday. Basinger had 75 assists (5.00 per set), 21 digs (1.40 per set), six kills, and three service aces in four matches for Case Western Reserve, leading the team in assists. She had 18 assists and nine digs in a loss to Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday before recording exactly 19 assists in her next three matches. Basinger added six digs and a service ace in a sweep of Kenyon, four digs, two service aces, and a kill in a four-set win over Allegheny, and two digs and a kill in a four-set loss to Colorado College. Basinger averages 5.00 assists per set this season, totaling 150 in eight matches for the Spartans to go along with 56 digs, nine kills, and eight service aces.
Sophomore defender Alex Eby (men's soccer) helped the Spartans record two shutouts during the team's 3-0-0 week. Eby played the most minutes of any CWRU field player, logging 240 minutes out of a possible 270 across the three contests. On Tuesday night, Eby helped the Spartans shut out Oberlin with the squad allowing just two shots with none on target in the contest. Lycoming managed just two shots in a shutout loss to Case Western Reserve on Saturday, including only one on goal. On Sunday, Allegheny's only goal was an own goal by CWRU with the Gators taking six shots with three on goal during the Spartans' 3-1 victory. Eby has appeared in a team-high 489 minutes this season with the squad allowing just three goals on 35 shots in six contests.
Senior defender/midfielder Maya Healy (women's soccer) recorded her first career two-goal game in a 2-0 victory over Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday night. Coming off the bench in both halves, Healy struck first in the 25th minute, giving CWRU the lead midway through the first half. Healy, who missed her entire junior season and most of her sophomore season due to injury, scored for the first time in 1,068 days. The senior doubled her tally in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 80th minute to secure the victory for the Spartans. The goals are the first two for Healy, who also has an assist, this season. Case Western Reserve moved to 4-1-0 following its two games last week.
The Spartans will look to bounce back on Friday, September 18 when the team travels to Holland, Michigan, to face Hope College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Sophomore Tara Markovic (women's tennis) won all three of her matches at the Big Red Invite hosted by Denison University on Saturday and Sunday in Granville, Ohio. In singles play, Markovic defeated Maia Nowicki of Denison 7-5, 7-6 (4). She won both of her doubles matches 6-0, partnering with Allison Wayne to take down Sara Dunn and Carrie Forster of Centre and pairing with Yasemin Bilgin to defeat Sophia DeGuzman and Nyah Montague of Kalamazoo. CWRU went 14-8 in singles matches and 10-4 in doubles matches at the invite.
The Spartans will travel to Gambier, Ohio, this weekend for the Kenyon Invite hosted by Kenyon College on Saturday and Sunday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Madeline Mescher (women's soccer) recorded her first career shutout on Wednesday night in a 2-0 road victory over Baldwin Wallace. Mescher, making her first career start, faced nine total shots and made one save in the victory. In two appearances this season, Mescher has not allowed a goal in 112:51, making two saves while facing 12 shots.
