The 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team opened its four-game series with New York University at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland on Friday afternoon, dropping the first game of the doubleheader 13-9 before a wild second contest resulted in a 19-19 after the contest was called due to darkness after the ninth inning.
The Spartans moved to 20-11-1 overall, including a 9-4-1 record in the University Athletic Association. The Violets stand at 18-12-1 on the year with a 6-7-1 league mark.
The disappointing result came despite a strong day at the plate for the Spartans who batted .417 (35-84) and slugged .631 over the two games with seven doubles, four triples, and a home run. Graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen led the team with five hits in six at-bats with three runs, six RBIs, three triples, and his eighth home run of the season.
Game 1 - NYU 13, #19 CWRU 9
The Violets pulled away late in a back-and-forth game to open the four-game series with a 13-9 win over the Spartans.
Camphausen finished the game three-for-three with three runs batted in, two runs, a double, a home run, and a walk. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson, graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso, and graduate student third baseman Zack Carinci each added two hits apiece for the Spartans, who finished the contest with 14 hits, including a double, two triples, and the Camphausen home run.
NYU's Nate Pallotta connected on a three-run home run in the top of the first to give the Violets an early lead, but CWRU responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Camphausen got the Spartans on the board with a sacrifice fly that plated senior center fielder Nick Harms, and a triple by Alonso scored sophomore designated hitter Tyler Stillson and cut the Violets' lead to a run. NYU extended its lead in the top of the second with a two-run home run from Harrison Blueweiss, but the Spartans chipped away at the advantage with senior left fielder Logan Andreyko scoring on a balk in the second to cut the lead to 5-3. In the fourth, Andreyko walked with one out, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Carinci. A two-out single by Anderson later in the frame drove in Carinci and knotted the score at 5-5.
With the game tied and a 2-2 count on Harms, lightning in the area forced a 50-minute delay in the game, but once play resumed, Harms singled through the right side, scoring Anderson and giving CWRU a 6-5 lead heading into the fifth. Another NYU home run, this time a solo blast by Nick Argenziano, evened the score again in the top of the fifth, but Camphausen answered with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the frame, his eighth of the season, to put CWRU back ahead 7-6. However, the Violets had an answer again, scoring four in the top of the sixth to go back in front by three, 10-7.
CWRU got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Jay Smith, but NYU added three more in the eighth to go ahead 13-8. Smith added an RBI single in the ninth to cut the lead to four, but it would be too little too late for the Spartans.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Zach Barnes suffered the loss in relief for CWRU, falling to 3-2 on the season. NYU reliever Cooper Paule picked up the win to improve to 3-1.
Game 2 - #19 CWRU 19, NYU 19
Camphausen salvaged a tie with a two-out, two RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to even the score at 19-19, as the Violets and the Spartans ran out of daylight in the second game on Friday.
After leading by as many as nine runs in the game CWRU struggled to hold onto the lead and the Violets scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 19-17 lead into the bottom of the inning. Carinci started the frame with a double and Arterburn followed with a single to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate. The Spartans were down to their final out after a pair of pop-outs, but Camphausen ambushed the NYU pitcher, sending the first pitch of his at-bat down the left-field line for a double, scoring both runners to even the score.
CWRU had one last chance to win the game, but a flyout ended the frame, and with darkness closing in, the umpires stopped play as the game ended in a tie.
NYU jumped out to an early lead again, scoring four runs in the top of the second on a pair of home runs, but CWRU answered back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Violets tied the game in the top of the third, but Anderson doubled in a pair with two outs in the bottom of the third and later scored on a balk to put CWRU ahead 8-5.
The teams exchanged runs in the fifth before CWRU appeared to break the contest open with a six-run bottom of the sixth, taking a 15-6 lead, but the Violets scored six of their own in the top of the seventh to get back within striking distance. CWRU scored two in the bottom of the seventh, including one on a Smith RBI triple, but the Violets remained close with four runs in the eighth to cut the lead to a run, 17-16, before scoring three in the ninth to take the lead back and set up the thrilling finish in the Spartans' last at-bat.
Camphausen went two-for-three in the second game with three walks, two doubles, three RBIs, and a run. Anderson went three-for-five with a double and two stolen bases and drove in four runs in the game while sophomore shortstop Nate Arterburn added four hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Smith and Carinci each had three hits in the game, including a pair of doubles from Carinci, and Harms added a two-for-six showing with a walk, his team-leading fifth triple of the season, and three RBIs.
The Spartans and the Violets are scheduled to continue their series with a single game on Saturday at noon. With rain currently in the forecast throughout the day on Saturday in Cleveland, please make sure to check athletics.case.edu for any schedule updates as they are made available.
