Case Western Reserve University graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen and sophomore designated hitter Tyler Stillson combined to drive in 10 runs and sophomore left-handed pitcher Quinn Saunders and first-year right-handed pitcher Ayush Shetty held New York University to a run on three hits in a 17-1 Spartans' win in seven innings to even the series on Saturday at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland.
The Spartans improved to 21-11-1 with the win, including a 10-4-1 record in University Athletic Association play, remaining a half-game ahead of Chicago in the league standings. NYU dropped to 18-13-1 with a 6-8-1 conference record.
After giving up a single to the third batter of the game, Saunders did not allow another hit until the top of the sixth inning, while scattering six walks in his season-high five and a third innings of work. He struck out a season-best eight batters in his outing and surrendered just three hits, holding the Violets scoreless until the sixth. Saunders earned the win in the game, improving to 1-1 and lowering his ERA to 4.62 for the season.
Shetty pitched the final inning and two-thirds, retiring all five batters he faced and striking out the final four NYU hitters of the game.
Meanwhile, Camphausen continued to swing a hot bat, going three-for-four with three runs and six RBIs, while connecting on his ninth and 10th home runs of the season. Stillson went two-for-four with a double, a stolen base, and four RBIs. Adding to the Spartans' 13-hit barrage as senior right fielder Nick Harms with a three-for-four showing with three runs, a double, and an RBI, and graduate third baseman Zack Carinci with a two-for-three performance with three runs, an RBI, and a stolen base.
The Spartans took a 3-0 lead after just three batters in the bottom of the first. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson led the game off with a double and scored on a base hit by Harms. Camphausen followed with a long home run to center field to give the Spartans a three-run lead. Later in the inning, Stillson doubled in Carinci to push the Spartans' lead to 4-0.
CWRU continued to add runs throughout the game, scoring three in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth to lead 12-0. After NYU scored in the top of the sixth, the Spartans expanded their lead further with a five-run bottom of the sixth, with Camphausen capping the scoring off with a three-run home run to give CWRU a 17-1 lead.
Senior right fielder Jay Smith added a one-for-three day with a double, two runs, and two RBIs, and Anderson and sophomore shortstop Nate Arterburn each drove in runs as well. All nine CWRU starters reached base at least once in the game.
NYU's Paul Guerne took the loss for the Violets, dropping to 2-1 on the season.
The Spartans and the Violets will conclude their four-game series on Sunday at Nobby's Ballpark with the first pitch now slated for 10:00 a.m., an hour earlier than initially scheduled. CWRU will also recognize its graduating players with 'Senior Day' on Sunday with a ceremony for the class beginning at 9:40 a.m.

Through the first three games of the series, Camphausen is eight-for-10 at the plate with three doubles, three home runs, six runs, 12 RBIs, and five walks. He has a 2.000 slugging percentage and a .765 on-base percentage over the three contests.

Camphausen now has 23 home runs as a Spartan and passed former CWRU players Steve Rosiek (1986-88) and Gordon Daily (1997-00) for the second most in program history with his two on Saturday. Including his time at Wooster, his 54 career home runs are the second-most among active Division III players.

Carinci is second among all UAA players this season in conference play with a .431 batting average. He is batting .538 (7-13) with two doubles, four RBIs, and eight runs against NYU this series.
