Track and Field Teams Place Fifth at All-Ohio Outdoor Championships

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed against the best schools in Division III in the state of Ohio on Friday and Saturday at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

The Spartans won three events and totaled 12 top three finishes at the two-day meet.

Four CWRU throwers placed in the top six in the hammer throw, led by event winner Ailean Duffie. The graduate student thrower placed first with a mark of 48.75 meters. Senior thrower Lauren Roskuszka was third in the event with a personal-best toss of 47.37 meters, graduate student thrower Michaela Burkhauser placed fourth with a mark of 45.98 meters, and senior thrower Rachel Ginn finished sixth by throwing the hammer 45.52 meters.

Burkhauser added two third place finishes in field events, earning the bronze in the shot put on Friday night with a toss of 12.55 meters and in the discus throw on Saturday afternoon with a throw of 40.16 meters.

On the track, senior runner Mike Lombardi was first to cross the line in the 10,000-meter run at 32:10.69 with junior runner Solomon Greene finishing as the runner-up in 32:14.12. The 4x400-meter relay of graduate student hurdler/jumper Yusuf Shaaban, first-year sprinter Charlie Stipanovich, first-year sprinter Madhan Manikandaswamy, and junior hurdler/sprinter Josh Bates also placed first with a time of 3:20.30 in the race. Individually, Shaaban and Bates placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.25 seconds and 56.32 seconds. Sophomore runner Jacob Slater was also a runner-up in a distance event, placing second in the 5,000-meter run in 15:00.45.

In the field, senior jumper Jordan Su bounded 10.60 meters to take second in the triple jump. A pair of first-year throwers placed third and fourth in the javelin throw. Bailey Bowen recorded a mark of 31.99 meters and Sarah Viveiros threw the spear 31.13 meters. Sophomore jumper Holly Schreiber cleared 3.45 meters to place third in the pole vault, while for the men's team, senior jumper Quaylen Lamarre had a mark of 4.35 meters to place fourth. Additionally, first-year thrower Ishaan Solanki placed fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 47.68 meters, and first-year jumpers Pierre-Andre Geoffrion and Krish Gupta were seventh and eighth in the long jump with leaps of 6.65 meters and 6.57 meters.

Junior hurdler/sprinter Bryce Hodge placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.65 seconds to round out the top eight finishes for the men's team.

For the CWRU women's team, junior runner Melanie Taylor was sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:20.08, first-year runner Becca Liaw placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run in 19:08.80, and first-year runner Cecilia Postma finished eighth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:59.57.

Nine Spartans traveled to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday for the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University. Junior runner Lauren Iagnemma recorded a top 10 mark in Division III this season in the 5,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 17:05.12. Junior runner Ayla Grabenbauer finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:14.69, which would rank in the top 25 in Division III, and senior runner Hans Holst finished the 800-meter run in 1:54.08, a top 50 time nationally.

Next weekend, the CWRU track and field teams will head to Berea, Ohio, for the Sparky Adams Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace University. The two-day meet begins on Friday, April 18 at 11 a.m.

Spartan Notes

  • The CWRU men's team placed fifth out of 14 teams at the All-Ohio Championships with 63.5 points, and the Spartan women's team finished fifth out of 13 teams with 67.0 points
  • Iagnemma's time was third-fastest in program history
  • In the hammer throw, Duffie recorded the eighth-best mark in program history and Roskuszka had the 10th-furthest ever throw for a Spartan
  • Hluck had the eighth-best all-time mark in the 1,500-meter run by a Spartan
