The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams continued the outdoor season by competing at the two-day Bob Kahn Invitational hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday.
The Spartans won seven events at the unscored meet and totaled 27 top three finishes across the two days of competition.
Graduate student Michaela Burkhauser placed first in three separate events for CWRU, winning the hammer throw (49.04 meters), discus throw (42.32 meters), and shot put (12.89 meters). The Spartans swept the throwing events with senior Lauren Roskuszka taking first in the javelin throw with a mark of 30.27 meters. Roskuszka also placed third in the hammer throw with a heave of 47.06 meters, trailing graduate student Ailean Duffie who was the runner-up with a mark of 47.19 meters. Additionally, first-year Bailey Bowen placed second in the javelin throw with a toss of 28.67 meters.
In the sand pit, senior Jordan Su won the triple jump by bounding 10.61 meters, and on the track, the 4x400-meter relay of first-year Siena Kannenberg, junior Julia Hluck, junior Arianna Holbrook, and junior Melanie Taylor crossed the line first at 4:08.92.
Holbrook and Hluck placed second and third in the 800-meter run with times of 2:15.80 and 2:18.25, respectively, while Kannenberg earned the bronze medal in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.84.
A trio of Spartans added third place finishes on the track with first-year Riley Friedman placing third in the 100-meter dash 12.96 seconds, junior Gabby Alphonse taking third in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.08 seconds, and first-year Cecilia Postma finishing third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:08.80.
For the men's team, first-year Brendan Bradish was first to cross the line in the 800-meter run at 1:56.95. Senior Quaylen Lamarre won the pole vault by clearing 4.50 meters, and first-year teammate David Goldstein placed second after jumping over the bar at 4.10 meters.
First-year Marvin Sze earned a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in the 100-meter dash in 11.00 seconds and second in the 200-meter dash in 22.30 seconds. In the 1500-meter run, senior Hans Holst was second to cross the line at 3:59.94.
Three CWRU sprinters placed in the top three in hurdling events. In the 400-meter hurdles, junior Josh Bates was the runner-up in 55.41 seconds and graduate student Yusuf Shaaban was third in 57.40 seconds. In the 110-meter hurdles, junior Bryce Hodge placed second with a time of 15.46 seconds.
Bates joined junior Aaron Brula, sophomore Praveen Sureshkumar, and senior Nicolas Lende for the 4x400-meter relay, which took third in 3:23.40. Individually, both first-year Pierre-Andre Geoffrion (long jump, 6.03 meters) and junior Connor Evans (triple jump, 12.19 meters) placed third in the field.
Meanwhile, at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis on Thursday night, junior Lauren Iagnemma placed 13th in her section of the 5000-meter run in 17:19.76 and junior Ayla Grabenbauer placed 15th in her section of the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:44.19.
Next weekend, the Spartan track and field teams will travel to Wooster, Ohio, for the Wooster Invitational with action on both Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5 on the campus of the College of Wooster.
