The 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team and 16th-ranked CWRU women's swimming and diving team swept Oberlin College on Saturday at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland.
The Spartan men's team, who improved to 4-1 in dual meets this season, defeated the Yeomen 231-57, and the Case Western Reserve women's team, who also improved to 4-1 in dual meets, defeated the Yeowomen 242-51.
Prior to the meet, the Spartans celebrated the 21 graduating members of the women's swimming and diving team as part of its Senior Day.
The Spartans bookended the meet with a pair of relay wins. The 200 Medley Relay of first-year Sayjel Tan, sophomore Lillian Paley, graduate student Amy Evans, and junior Claire Kozma placed first in 1:50.97 to start the meet, and the 200 Free Relay of senior Gabriella Chambers, junior Eliza Dixon, first-year Marina Oria, and sophomore Sheila Monera Cabarique concluded the meet with a victory in 1:40.27.
Tan added an individual win in the 50 Back, finishing the race in 27.85 seconds. Kozma contributed a pair of wins, taking the 50 Free in 24.38 seconds and the 100 Free in 53.94 seconds.
Senior Kate Menzer was one of three additional Spartans to win a pair of events for the women's team. She took the 100 IM in 1:03.37 and placed first in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:29.11. Sophomore Ava Ellis won the 500 Free with a time of 5:19.28 and touched the wall first in the 200 IM at 2:14.49. On the diving boards, senior Abigail Wilkov placed first in both events with scores of 265.05 in the 1-meter dive and 275.47 in the 3-meter dive.
Further members of the CWRU women's swimming team who won events included junior Julia Cho (50 Breast, 32.79 seconds), senior Nara Lee (50 Fly, 26.70 seconds), sophomore Maggie Rose Rook (200 Free, 1:57.05), junior Lauren Valentine (200 Back, 2:09.54), and senior Selah Dean (200 Fly, 2:12.22).
The men's team won both relay events as the 200 Medley Relay of juniors Emil LaSida, Julian Kim, William Froass, and Mason Bencurik placed first in 1:31.53, and the 200 Free Relay of LaSida, Froass, Bencurik, and junior Ben Borvendeg finished in 1:23.69.
Four members of the relays added individual event victories for CWRU. LaSida won both the 100 IM (52.56 seconds) and the 100 Free (46.93 seconds). Kim placed first in the 50 Breast in 26.18 seconds, Bencurik was the first finisher in the 50 Free in 21.27 seconds, and Froass won the 50 Fly in 22.67 seconds.
Senior Peter Meng won a trio of events for the Spartans, placing first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:42.58, winning the 200 Back in 1:54.30, and taking the 200 IM by swimming a time of 1:54.18. On the diving boards, senior Nico Billoni won both events, taking the 3-meter dive with a score of 264.22 and the 1-meter dive with a score of 279.22.
Adding event victories for CWRU were first-year Vladimir Shibalov (200 Fly, 1:57.40), senior Jiro Batt (200 Breast, 2:11.58), and senior Griffin Gushman (500 Free, 4:44.95).
The Case Western Reserve swimming and diving teams will conclude the dual meet portion of their schedules on Saturday, February 1, when the teams host Kenyon College starting at 1 p.m. Prior to the meet, the Spartans will celebrate the graduating members of the men's swimming and diving team.
