No. 13/17 CWRU Swim Dive Sweeps SUNY Geneseo to Start Spring Semester

The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team and 17th-ranked CWRU women's swimming and diving team swept 18th and 23rd-ranked SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland. The Spartan men's team prevailed 191-109 and the CWRU women's team won 215-85.

Both Case Western Reserve teams improved to 3-1 in dual meets this season, while both Knight teams dropped to 4-1

Seniors Gabriella Chambers and Claire Kozma contributed to four event victories for the Spartans. The duo teamed with seniors Simone Vale and Kate Menzer to open the day with a win in the 200 Medley Relay in 1:47.95. In the final event of the afternoon, Chambers, Kozma, Vale, and senior Kelly Vann won the 200 Free Relay in 1:37.29.

Chambers won both sprint free events at the dual meet, touching the wall first in the 50 Free after 23.91 seconds and claiming the 100 Free in 52.79 seconds. Kozma added first-place finishes in the 100 Fly in 57.83 seconds and 200 Fly in 2:08.13.

Senior Amelia Myhrvold swept the backstroke events by winning both the 100 Back and 200 Back. She finished the shorter race in 59.50 seconds and the longer race in 2:08.75.

In distance freestyle events, sophomore Ava Ellis finished the 500 Free in 5:16.87 to take first place, and sophomore Maggie Rose Rook swam the 200 Free in 1:56.82 for the event victory. Menzer added a final swimming win, taking the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.87.

The Spartans won both diving events with senior Abigail Wilkov placing first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 298.73, and senior Jocelyn Schechter winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 276.68.

The men's 200 Medley Relay of first-year Edgar Rutkauskas, and juniors Emil LaSidaWilliam Froass, and Mason Bencurik started the meet with a time of 1:32.05 to place first. Bencurik and Froass both won two individual events for CWRU at the dual. Bencurik claimed a pair of freestyle events, winning the 100 Free in 46.42 seconds and the 200 Free in 1:44.32. Froass swept the backstroke events, claiming the 100 Back with a time of 51.96 seconds and the 200 Back with a time of 1:55.81. Adding an event win was LaSida, who placed first in the 50 Free with a time of 20.90 seconds.

Senior Peter Meng won a trio of events in three different strokes. He placed first in the 1000 Free with a time of 9:51.17, touched the wall first in the 200 Breast at 2:05.87, and claimed the 200 IM in 1:58.31.

In the butterfly events, first-year Edward Steward won both the 100 Fly and 200 Fly, finishing the shorter race in 51.77 and the longer one in 1:57.00.

Senior Stephen Hogeman helped CWRU sweep the freestyle events, winning the 500 Free in 4:50.96.

The Spartans will continue their three-meet homestand with a matchup against Oberlin College on Saturday, January 25 inside Veale Natatorium beginning at 1 p.m. Prior to the dual, the CWRU women's swimming and diving team will celebrate its graduating members as part of Senior Day.
