In 2023, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team made history, earning the program's third-ever selection to the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans finished the season with a record of 22-9, the team's second consecutive 22-win campaign, and placed third in the University Athletic Association.
CWRU reached the postseason for the third time in program history and first since 2015. The Spartans were matched up against the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, ranked 23rd in the country by the AVCA, at the Holland, Michigan, Regional on the campus of Hope College. After taking the first two sets of the match, the team lost in heartbreaking fashion, falling in five sets to conclude its season.
Senior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo became the first All-American in program history, earning selection to the AVCA All-America First Team after her outstanding season during which she was also named the program's first-ever University Athletic Association Most Valuable Player. Ngo, who had at least 10 kills in 17 matches and at least five total blocks in 11 matches, finished the season with 317 kills (3.30 per set) on a .323 hitting percentage, the fifth-best rate in program history. She ranked fourth in the country with 1.27 total blocks per set, ending the year with 122 total blocks, including 19 solo blocks. A three-time All-UAA First Team selection, she set the program record for career total blocks per set (1.17) and ended her career fourth in points per set (3.79), fifth in block assists (255) and hitting percentage (.289), sixth in total blocks (334), and ninth in kills per set (2.78). In the classroom, Ngo was selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America First Team.
Ngo helped the Spartans place third at the regular season-ending UAA Championship, the best conference finish for the team since 2015. CWRU, seeded sixth after going 3-4 in conference play, started the tournament with an upset of third-seeded and ninth-ranked WashU in three sets. After falling to seventh-ranked and second-seeded NYU in the semifinal, the team responded with a thrilling five-set win over Chicago in the Third-Place Match. In round robin play, the Spartans earned wins over Rochester, Brandeis, and NYU, upsetting the Violets on September 23 at Horsburgh Gym.
The third-place finish netted Head Coach Karen Farrell, Assistant Coach Kim Waters, Associate Head Coach Nelson Wittenmyer, and Assistant Coaches Jeff Harrah and Bailey Hagedorn UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors, the third of Farrell's career. The long-tenured leader of the Spartans reached 400 wins at the school with a sweep of Defiance at home on September 9. Farrell ended the season with a record of 415-287 at CWRU and 492-392 overall in 28 seasons as a head coach.
A pair of Spartans, senior libero Alyssa Blessinger and junior outside hitter Rea Marfatia, earned selection to the All-UAA Second Team for their performances throughout the season. Blessinger appeared in all 108 sets for CWRU throughout the season, leading the team with 511 digs and averaging 4.73 per set, the third-best rate in the league. She also paced the squad with 43 service aces and ended her career as the program career leader with 0.42 service aces per set. Blessinger eclipsed 1,000 digs for her career on September 6 and concluded the season with 1,454 digs, the 10th-most in program history, averaging 4.78 per set, the second-best rate in CWRU history. Marfatia, the only junior captain, appeared in every set as well, ranking second on the team in kills and digs and third on the squad in total blocks. She totaled 304 kills (2.81 per set) on a career-high .200 attacking percentage and added 326 digs (3.02 per set). Marfatia also contributed 46 total blocks, 35 service aces, and 20 assists. She recorded at least 10 kills and 10 digs in nine matches, including in the team's five-set postseason loss.
Junior setter/right side hitter Carly Scott and senior setter Ansley Yamaato directed the team's offense from the setter position. Both played in every set for the Spartans, and each was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. Scott led CWRU with 615 assists (5.69 per set) and added 156 digs (1.44 per set), 58 kills, 39 total blocks (one solo), and eight service aces. She recorded at least 20 assists in 16 matches and double-digit digs in four matches. Yamaato contributed 489 assists (4.53 per set), 240 digs (2.22 per set), and 33 service aces. She recorded a season-high 32 assists in the NCAA Tournament match, had at least 20 assists six times, and earned a double-double (at least 10 assists and 10 digs) in 10 matches.
Ngo and Marfatia led the attack at the net that also included sophomore outside hitter Kalli Wall, sophomore middle blockers Kiya Levy and Amanda Ngo, first-year outside hitter Emily Goodpaster, and junior middle blocker Lily Crouch. Wall, who played in 30 matches, averaged 2.85 kills and 0.56 blocks per set. Levy and Crouch each averaged 2.07 points per set, Amanda Ngo added 2.08 points per set, and Goodpaster recorded 97 kills and 196 digs.
Blessinger, Jennifer Ngo, Scott, and Yamaato were named to the CSC Academic All-District Team for their performance in the classroom, and they were joined by Crouch, Marfatia, Wall, seniors Hannah Fox, Lauren Himmel, and Karoline Shellhause, juniors Jolie Held, Chloe Maciejewski, Erin Murphy, Maria Tuepker, and Deme Yianas, and sophomore Elizabeth Onyekwere in earning UAA All-Academic honors.
