Led by a strong senior class and with an influx of new talent, the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team turned in one of their best seasons in recent memory. The Spartans had their best finish at the regional meet since 2012 and finished the season with an 11-4 record in dual meets.
CWRU placed 11th at the NCAA Central Regional meet, held at the Veale Center on campus for the first time in over 10 years. Sophomore Calvin Cai and first-year Art Martinez each placed fifth in their weight classes to lead the team to 36.5 points. Cai, competing at 157 pounds, went 5-2 at the regional meet, and Martinez, competing at 141 pounds, went 4-2.
The fifth place regional finish capped an impressive first year of collegiate wrestling for Martinez, who led the team with 34 wins and a .739 winning percentage. The NWCA Scholar All-American finished the season with a 34-12 record, including 12 pins and three technical falls. He advanced to the second day of competition at the historic Pete Willson Invite and won 12 consecutive matches from January 10 to January 27, including five pins and two technical falls.

In addition to Martinez and Cai, senior Mitchell Arch and first-years Marty Landes, E.J. Alizio, Calvin Rowan, and Thomas Wagner were among the team's top performers during the 2022-23 campaign. Arch was named an NWCA Scholar All-American for the fourth consecutive season, finishing the year with a 23-11 overall record and a team-high 15 pins.
