For the first time in program history, the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team was ranked in the top 25 nationally by the NWCA.
In the organization's rankings released on December 31, CWRU was 21st in the team dual rankings and tied for 23rd in the team tournament rankings for Division III. The Spartans had never been ranked in the top 25. Additionally, Case Western Reserve was ranked 17th in the team dual standings and 20th in the team tournament standings by The Open Mat.
As a team, the Spartans are 8-2 in dual matches this season, including seven consecutive victories. CWRU defeated then-17th-ranked Ithaca and then-12th-ranked Arcadia at the Chocolate Duals on December 20 in Grantham, Pennsylvania. The squad's lone loss this season to a Division III opponent was to Baldwin Wallace, who is currently ranked 15th nationally.Â
The Spartans, who compete in Region V in Division III, boasted four wrestlers ranked regionally and two nationally by the NWCA in its latest release. Senior Art Martinez (20-1) ranked second in country and in the region at 133 pounds. Senior Aidan Gassel (13-3) is 11th nationally and second in the region at 197 pounds. In the region, senior Thomas Wagner (18-5) slotted in at four at 157 pounds and sophomore Chase Crutchley (17-7) was sixth at 174 pounds. Martinez was ranked first nationally by The Open Mat, and Gassel was ranked 10th.
Case Western Reserve first-year Hunter Keane (141 pounds) leads the squad with 21 wins, going 21-5 so far in his collegiate debut season. Six of his wins are by fall and three are by technical fall. Junior Mathew Gummere has won 14 bouts at 184 pounds, and senior E.J. Alizio (125 pounds) and sophomore Louka Babic (174 pounds) have 11 victories each.
CWRU hosts Manchester University and the University of Mount Union on Saturday at Horsburgh Gymnasium for the Claude Sharer Duals.Â
