Case Western Reserve University senior Thomas Wagner was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for wrestling based on his performance last weekend.
Wagner won all six of his bouts at the Tom Jarman Spartan Mat Classic to win the 157-pound bracket. Wagner won three of his matches by fall, including two of his final three, and added a technical fall. He started the day with a 19-3 technical fall and followed with a pin in 4:29. After a 12-1 major decision, Wagner pinned Baldwin Wallace's Nicholas Brunst in 4:28 in the quarterfinal and Keagen Mabie from Manchester in 2:48 in the semifinal. He won the bracket with a 5-0 decision over Wabash's Andrew Ross.
This season, Wagner is 26-5 with seven pins and six technical falls. He has won 14 consecutive matches dating back to December 20. In four seasons with the Spartans, Wagner has an 84-47 overall record with 28 pins and 18 technical falls. This is his first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor.
CWRU placed third at the event out of 17 teams with 127.5 points. The Spartans will return to Cleveland on Friday, January 23 for their final home match of the season, hosting Washington & Jefferson at Horsburgh Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Prior to the dual, CWRU will honor its eight graduating members, including Wagner, as part of Senior Night.
