Case Western Reserve University senior runner Jack Begley set a school record in the 10,000-meter run at the WashU Distance Carnival on the Bushyhead Track on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday night.
Begley completed the race in 29:41.72 to place fifth in the fastest heat, becoming the first runner in program history to break the 30 minute mark in the event. Begley held the previous school record of 30:26.61, set at the Bison Outdoor Classic last season. His time currently ranks eighth in Division III.
Sophomore runner Aidan Nathan also competed in the heat, placing 24th with a time of 30:31.80, the third-fastest time in program history and 23rd-fastest time in Division III this season. In the 5,000-meter run, senior runner Joe Jaster placed eighth in the fastest heat with a time of 14:23.62, the second-fastest time in program history behind his own school record of 14:14.74. His time currently ranks 12th in the country.
The majority of the CWRU men's and women's track and field teams competed at the two-day Bob Kahn Invitational, hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday. The Spartans won five events at the meet and totaled 34 top five finishes.
Junior thrower Adrienne Wachtman won the javelin throw with a mark of 38.87 meters, the fourth best in program history and 13th-best mark in Division III this season. Sophomore jumper Lauren Roskuszka placed second in the event with a throw of 36.15 meters. Wachtman added a pair of top five finishes, placing fourth in the discus throw with a heave of 36.88 meters and fifth in the shot put with a mark of 10.93 meters.
The Spartans also took the top two spots in the 1,500-meter run, with first-year runner Lauren Iagnemma crossing the line first at 4:52.16 and senior runner Melissa Phung-Rojas following her at 4:56.83. Additionally, first-year runner Ayla Grabenbauer placed fourth in the event with a time of 5:06.28.
Rounding out the event wins for the Case Western Reserve women's track and field team was senior runner Catherine Phillips, who placed first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:14.20.
In the triple jump, a pair of Spartans reached the podium, with junior hurdler/jumper Emily Hopkins finishing as the runner-up with a mark of 11.06 meters, and sophomore hurdler/jumper Sarah Ozeki placing third by bounding 10.84 meters. Hopkins's mark ranks 16th in Division III this season. Ozeki added a fifth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.67 seconds.
Three individuals and a relay added third place finishes for CWRU. Senior jumper Mia Vargo was third in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters, first-year jumper Layla Seaton placed third in the long jump with a leap of 4.80 meters, and sophomore runner Marquis Globokar crossed the line third in the 800-meter run at 2:26.31. The 4x100-meter relay of junior sprinter/jumper Anna Zinsser, sophomore sprinter/jumper Jordan Su, first-year hurdler/sprinter Gabby Alphonse, and first-year hurdler/jumper Grace Misiunas placed third with a time of 51.34 seconds.
In the pole vault, senior vaulter Victoria Zhao took fourth by clearing 3.33 meters.
Members of the Spartan men's track and field team won two events at the meet. In the 1,500-meter run, Case Western Reserve took the top four spots. Senior runner Logan Singer won the event in 3:56.43. He was followed by sophomore runner Nate Gilbert at 4:00.33, graduate student runner Anthony Hart at 4:40.73, and sophomore runner Hans Holst at 4:04.76. Gilbert added a third place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.44.
The 4x400-meter relay of senior sprinter/hurdler Pierce Boucher, junior sprinter/jumper Yusuf Shaaban, senior runner Robert St. Clair, and first-year hurdler/sprinter Josh Bates also placed first, finishing in 3:29.46. Bates, Boucher, and Shaaban also ran top five times in the 400-meter hurdles, with Bates finishing as the runner-up in 57.75 seconds, Boucher taking third in 57.84 seconds, and Shaaban placing fifth in 59.26 seconds. In addition, Bates had the fourth-fastest time in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line at 11.29 seconds.
In the 110-meter hurdles, two Spartans reached the podium. first-year hurdler/sprinter Bryce Hodge placed second in 15.42 seconds and senior hurdler Peculiar Nzegbuna took third in 16.16 seconds. Sophomore sprinter Nicolas Lende added a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash, finishing the sprint in 51.52 seconds.
A trio of CWRU student-athletes added third place finishes, with two others taking fourth place in their events. In the 5,000-meter run, junior runner Stephen Henry placed third in 15:44.03 and senior runner Liam O'Reilly finished right behind him in 15:46.80. The Spartans also had success in the field, with sophomore vaulter Quaylen Lamarre (4.40 meters) and first-year vaulter Anthony DeCarlo (3.95 meters) placing third and fourth in the pole vault, and senior thrower Ben Pinkowski (43.15 meters) placing third in the javelin throw.
Next Saturday, April 8, the teams will travel to Delaware, Ohio, for the Marv Frye Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University with both field and track events starting at 11 a.m.
