The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked first in Division III, wrapped up its spring break trip with four wins in five matches over the last two days. After falling 5-2 to the University of Indianapolis (the top-ranked team in Division II) on Tuesday, CWRU went on to defeat Oneonta State 9-0 on Tuesday and then registered 9-0 wins over Mary Hardin-Baylor, Illinois Tech, and 30th-ranked Skidmore on Wednesday.
CWRU finished its spring break trip with a 9-2 record with the team's only two losses coming to the top-ranked Division II and NAIA teams. The Spartans stand at 18-4 overall on the season, including a 15-0 mark against Division III opposition.
In the loss to UIndy, CWRU secured the doubles point with wins from junior Sahil Dayal and senior Diego Maza at no. 2 doubles and senior James Hopper and sophomore Ansh Shah at no. 3 doubles. Sophomore Ajay Mahenthiran added a win at fifth singles, but the Spartans would fall in each of the other five doubles contests. UIndy improved to 10-1 following the win.
Later in the day, CWRU made quick work of Oneonta State with doubles wins from first-years Matthew Plunkett and Rohan Bhat at no. 1 doubles, sophomore Pranav Ikkurthy and first-year Justin Prochnow at no. 2 doubles, and first-year Anmay Devaraj and sophomore Ben Martin at no. 3 doubles. Plunkett (1st singles), Bhat (2nd singles), Devaraj (3rd singles), Martin (4th singles), Prochnow (5th singles), and Ikkurthy (6th singles) each added victories during the Spartans' sweep, which dropped Oneonta to 1-3 on the season.
CWRU faced both Mary-Hardin Baylor and Illinois Tech simultaneously on Wednesday morning, splitting the squad between the two matches. Against Mary-Hardin Baylor, Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru won at no. 1 doubles, senior Chris Provenzano and Shah won at no. 2 doubles, and Dayal and Maza won at no. 3 doubles. Claiming singles wins in the match were senior Michael Sutanto (no. 1 singles), Shah (no. 2 singles), Mahenthiran (no. 3 singles), sophomore Casey Hishinuma (no. 4 singles), Maza (no. 5 singles), and Ikkurthy (no. 6 singles), each in straight sets. Mary-Hardin Baylor dropped to 8-3 with the loss.
Bhat and Devaraj (no. 1 doubles), juniors Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang (no. 2 doubles), and senior John Kasner and Plunkett (no. 3 doubles) all earned wins for the Spartans against Illinois Tech, as did Plunkett (1), Devaraj (2), Bhat (3), French (4), Prochnow (5), and Martin (6) in singles play, with all six winning in straight sets. Illinois Tech fell to 2-8 with the loss.
To complete the trip, CWRU earned its fifth win of the season against a nationally ranked Division III opponent with a 9-0 win over 30th-ranked Skidmore. Maza and Provenzano (1), Sutanto and Dayal (2), and Plunkett and Devaraj (3) each picked up doubles wins for the Spartans. In singles play, Hopper earned a three-set win in the first match, while Aduru (2), Sutanto (3), Shah (4), Mahenthiran (5), and Hishinuma (6) each won in straight sets to drop Skidmore to 5-3 on the season.
With its spring break trip now complete, CWRU will be off until Friday, March 31 when it will face a key regional test in 10th-ranked Denison at 5:00 p.m. at the Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster, Ohio.
