The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team extended its winning streak to 12 matches with a 4-2 win at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida on Sunday morning.
CWRU improved to 12-2 on the season following the win, while Lynn dropped to 7-4 with the loss.
CWRU fell behind in the match after dropping the doubles point to the Knights. At second doubles, Lynn's Gianmarco Amatiste and Diego Gonzalez bested junior Sahil Dayal and senior Chris Provenzano 6-4, and at third doubles, Ray Chavez and Yaron Guberman defeated seniors Diego Maza and Michael Sutanto 6-2. CWRU senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru led 5-4 over Gabriele Felline and Nicolas Cabrera the doubles point was decided and play was stopped.
Hopper evened the score in the match with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 1 singles over Gonzalez, and sophomore Ajay Mahenthiran gave the Spartans their first lead of the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Chavez. Lynn evened the score when Guberman topped Sutanto 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at third singles, but a win by sophomore Ansh Shah at fourth singles over Amatiste, 7-6, 7-5, put the Spartans a match away from clinching. Sophomore Casey Hishinuma provided the clinching point for CWRU, coming from behind to defeat Haktan Garayev in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
When play was stopped due to decision, Aduru had split the first two sets at no. 2 singles with Felline 7-5, 6-7.
A second match initially scheduled for the Spartans on Sunday against Florida National University was canceled.
The Spartans will continue their Spring Break trip tomorrow with a pair of challenging matches, facing Barry, the third-ranked team in Division II, at 10:00 a.m. and Keiser, which won the 2023 ITA NAIA Indoor Championship, at 2:00 p.m. in Miami Shores, Florida.
