The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked second in Division III, ran its winning streak to seven-straight matches with 9-0 wins over Allegheny College and Oberlin College at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 7-2 overall following the wins, including a perfect 7-0 mark against Division III opposition this season. Allegheny fell to 3-1 after the loss, while Oberlin dropped to 1-3.
The Spartans opened the day against Allegheny with senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru besting Ethan Carr and Anton Hedlund 8-2 at no. 1 doubles, junior Sahil Dayal and senior Chris Provenzano winning 8-0 at no. 2 doubles over Julien Voisey and Adam Shinomiya, and seniors Diego Maza and Michael Sutanto winning 8-0 over Guillaume Emiliano Loinard-Gonzalez and David Rodriguez at no. 3 doubles.
In singles play, sophomore Ansh Shah extended CWRU's advantage to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Shinomiya in the third singles match, and sophomore Ajay Mahenthiran won the clincher with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rodriguez at fifth singles. Other singles wins came from Hopper in the first match (6-2, 6-2 over Hedlund), Sutanto in the second match (6-1, 6-2 over Carr), Hishinuma in the fourth match (6-2, 6-1 over Voisey), and Maza in the sixth match (6-0, 6-0 over Will Jarvie).
CWRU was dominant again in its second match of the day against Oberlin. The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead with wins from Dayal and Provenzano at no. 1 doubles (8-3 over James Dill and Grant North), graduate student Matthew Chen and Shah at no. 2 doubles (8-4 over Sean Billerbeck and Rohan Gold), and Hopper and first-year Matthew Plunkett at no. 3 doubles (8-2 over Sebastien Naginski and Shawn Lisann).
Plunkett went on to win 6-3, 6-2 over Billerbeck in the first singles match, while at no. 2 singles, first-year Anmay Devaraj defeated Gold in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0. At third singles, Sutanto claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Naginski and Maza bested Lisann 6-3, 6-1. At the bottom of the lineup, first-year Rohan Bhat won a 6-0, 6-1 match over Dill at fifth singles and first-year Justin Prochnow defeated James Foster 6-2, 6-0.
The Spartans will now turn their attention toward the 2023 ITA Indoor National Championship next weekend in St. Peter Minnesota, as the team will look to defend its title from last season. CWRU will open play at the event against 10th-ranked Emory on Friday, February 24. More information on the event will be posted to athletics.case.edu later in the week.
