What to Watch For
- It's All Academic: Each fall, student-athletes from Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University meet on the gridiron with the victor claiming the Academic Bowl. Although the football series between the Spartans and Tartans began in 1970, it was not until 1986 that the annual meeting between two of the nation's top academic institutions was labeled the Academic Bowl. The Academic Bowl is more than a trophy, however, as it emphasizes a "Commitment to Academic and Athletic Excellence." The Spartans won the first Academic Bowl in 1986, defeating Carnegie Mellon 21-14. In the all-time Academic Bowl series, the Tartans hold a 21-15 advantage, including a 12-5 edge in games played in Pittsburgh. The Spartans won eight-straight Academic Bowl games between 2007 and 2014, but Carnegie Mellon has won six of the last seven matchups between the two teams, including three-straight. Including pre-Academic Bowl matchups, Saturday's game will be the 52nd all-time meeting between the Tartans and the Spartans, with Carnegie Mellon holding a 32-19 advantage in the series.
- Coyne Approaching 1,000: Junior wide receiver Noah Coyne's 886 receiving yards this season are the eighth-most ever by a Spartan player, and he needs 114 yards in the team's final game of the year to notch the seventh 1,000-yard receiving season in program history. Coyne is currently eighth among all Division III players with 23.32 yards per reception this year.
- Record in Sais-t: Junior defensive back Dominic Sais picked off his team-leading sixth pass of the season last Saturday against Allegheny, tying him for the eighth most in a single year in program history. He needs two interceptions in the team's final game of the year to match the program's single-season record of eight interceptions, set by Tom Olsavsky in 1984 and John Polivka in 1986. Sais is ranked third among Division III players this season with 0.7 interceptions per game.
