Aduru & Maza Win ITA Central Region Doubles Title; Mahenthiran to Play for Singles Title on Monday

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza won a pair of matches to secure the ITA Central Region Doubles Championship on Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan, while junior Ajay Mahenthiran won two matches to reach the finals of the singles draw.

By virtue of winning the ITA Championship, both Aduru and Maza will earn All-America honors for the 2023-24 season. It is the second-straight year that each has earned All-America acclaim for their doubles play. It marked the third time in program history that  CWRU doubles team has won the ITA Central Region Championship, along with former Spartans James Hopper and Matthew Chen in 2019 and Hopper and Jonathan Powell in 2021.

Aduru and Maza, seeded second in the draw, began the day with an 8-4 win over teammates and seventh-seeded sophomore Anmay Devaraj and senior Sahil Dayal in the semifinals. Aduru and Maza then bested Denison's fourth-seeded duo of Ethan Green and Kael Shah to win the ITA Regional Championship.

In other doubles action on Sunday, junior Casey Hishinuma and graduate student Michael Sutanto defeated Dylan Lemon and Martin Suarez of Anderson 8-1 in the semifinals of the doubles consolation draw, before falling by walk-over in the consolation draw.

Meanwhile, Mahenthiran, seeded ninth in the singles draw, bested fourth-seeded teammate Sutanto 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals before claiming a three-set win over Denison's Ethan Green, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the championship match. Also in action in the singles draw on Sunday was ninth-seeded Hishinuma, who suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Chicago's Emil Grantcharov, also seeded ninth.

With his appearance in the championship, Mahenthiran secured his place in the singles draw of the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia later in October regardless of the outcome of Monday's match.

Mahenthiran will aim to become the second Spartan in program history to win the ITA Central Regional Singles Championship when he plays for the Championship on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. against Grantcharov in Kalamazoo. Results will be posted to athletics.case.edu and CWRU athletics social media platforms when available.

The Spartans were also in action at the Big Red Invitational in Granville, Ohio over the weekend, going 6-4 as a team in singles matches and 7-5 in doubles play. Winning singles contests at the event were first-years George Kosseifi and Trey Lambright, sophomores Justin Prochnow and Matthew Plunkett, junior Ben Martin, and senior Daniel French. In doubles action, Martin and sophomore Jackson Schuetzle and sophomore Rohan Bhat and Kosseifi each went 2-0 on Saturday.
