Box Score With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, junior infielder Trey Haley delivered a walk-off triple to give the Case Western Reserve University baseball team a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Brandeis University at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 12-11 on the season and 6-2 in University Athletic Association play. With the win and a loss by second-place New York University, CWRU now leads the conference by two games with eight to play. The hosts took three of four from the Judges, who fell to 10-5 on the season and 1-3 in the UAA, tied for fourth in the conference ledger.
Case Western Reserve trailed for the entire game and needed a run in the ninth inning to extend the contest. Sophomore third baseman/pitcher Zack Carinci led the frame off with an infield single. First-year outfielder Nick Harms delivered the game-tying hit, a double to right center field that scored Carinci. Harms attempted to stretch the double into a triple but was thrown out at third base. The next two Spartans were retired, sending the game to extra innings.
Carinci, who moved from third base to the mound in the eighth inning, recorded two strikeouts in the extra frame to give CWRU a chance to walk the game off. With one out, senior outfielder Cole Jarrett reached on a fielding error and scored the winning run via Haley's triple.
Carinci (1-1) earned his first career win in relief, pitching three hitless innings with just one walk and four strikeouts. He went two-for-four at the plate with a walk and two runs batted in. Haley finished the game two-for-three with two walks, and graduate student infielder Tre Armstrong collected two hits, one walk, two runs batted in, and a stolen base.
Brandeis opened an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning and three in the second inning. However, the Spartan bullpen shut the Judges down for the rest of the game and combined for 14 strikeouts. Carinci, first-year Kyle Gearding, and sophomores Patrick O'Connor, Andrew Allen, and Matthew DuBois pitched nine and one-third innings for Case Western Reserve.
The CWRU comeback started in the first inning, with the team down 4-0. Carinci and junior catcher Jack Anderson led off the frame with a pair of walks. Anderson, who advanced to third on a fly out, scored on an Armstrong groundout to put the Spartans on the board.
In the second inning, junior outfielder Kevin Mackenzie scored on a bases loaded sacrifice fly from graduate student shortstop Jacob Lott, cutting the deficit to five, 7-2.
Case Western Reserve did not score again until the sixth inning when the team added three runs to make the score 7-5. Jarrett singled with one out, and Haley followed with a walk. Jarrett scored on a single by Anderson, and Carinci drove both Haley and Anderson in with a single of his own. In the next frame, following a sacrifice bunt from Mackenzie, Jarrett drove in Armstrong with a sacrifice fly to bring the Spartans within one. Following a scoreless top of the ninth inning, CWRU completed the comeback win in the next two frames and take three games in the four-game series.
The Spartans continue their eight-game homestand on Wednesday, when the team hosts top-ranked Marietta at Nobby's Ballpark for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
