Box Score On the second day of its Spring Break trip, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team lost 10-9 to Roanoke College on Monday afternoon at Salem Memorial Ballpark in Salem, Virginia.
The Spartans fall to 3-3 on the season while the Maroons improve to 5-4.
The first two batters of the game, senior outfielder Cole Jarrett and first-year outfielder Logan Andreyko, reached base for CWRU and moved into scoring position on a double steal. Sophomore third baseman Zack Carinci then opened the scoring with a rare two-run sacrifice fly to give the Spartans the early 2-0 edge. After senior starting pitcher Nick Denove set the Maroons down in order, junior first baseman Jonathan Simon doubled the Case Western Reserve lead with a two-run single.
Roanoke battled back in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to one. The Maroons threatened to score more in the inning, but left the bases loaded. In the fourth inning, Andreyko singled home a run to put CWRU ahead 5-3, and senior designated hitter Tre Armstrong brought in another run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
The Maroons again closed the gap, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth on doubles. First-year catcher Jay Smith put the Spartans ahead by two, 7-5, with a single in the top of the fifth inning, scoring graduate student shortstop Jacob Lott who had tripled earlier in the inning. Roanoke tied the game at 7 in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a single and a double play. In the sixth inning, Armstrong hit a two-run home run to left field, his first of the season, to give the Spartans a 9-7 advantage. However, they could not maintain the lead as Roanoke first baseman Owen Lawn hit a two-run home run of his own to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth, third baseman Jonny Wall slugged a home run to give the Maroons a 10-9 lead. Despite putting both the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the top of the ninth inning, Case Western Reserve could not rally.
Armstrong finished the day two-for-four with the home run and three runs batted in. Carinci and Simon also drove in two runs, while Lott and junior catcher Jack Anderson added two hits each. The Spartans were frequently on the bases, collecting 11 hits, drawing four walks, and reaching six times after being hit by a pitch and twice on errors.
CWRU concludes its three-game series with Roanoke on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
