CWRU Defeats Emory 12-3 to Win First UAA Series of 2022

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University first-year centerfielder Nick Harms hit his third home run as many games, and the bullpen stretched its scoreless streak to 15-straight innings, as the Spartans defeated Emory University 12-3 to clinch a series win over the Eagles in Atlanta, Georgia in the teams' first University Athletic Association weekend of the campaign.

The Spartans have now won five of their last seven games to improve to 9-10 overall and ended the first weekend of conference play with a 3-1 league record. Emory dropped to 14-11 following the loss.

CWRU's offense totaled 12 hits, en route to recording its second-straight game with a double-digit run total and its fourth overall this season. Harms finished the day two-for-four with three runs scored, a home run, a double, a walk and a stolen base. Junior left fielder Kevin Mackenzie added a three-for-four day at the plate with two runs, two RBIs and a walk. Junior catcher Jack Anderson also tallied a pair of hits, including a double, and stole a pair of bases.

Emory struck first in Sunday's series finale, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second off CWRU senior starting pitcher Willem Bouma. In the top of the third, a two-out single by sophomore third baseman Zack Carinci drove in first-year right fielder Logan Andreyko to halve the Eagles' lead. Harms evened the score with a home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning, and then a base hit by senior shortstop Jacob Lott, accompanied by an Emory error, allowed Mackenzie to score the go-ahead run for the Spartans. Later in the inning, Lott crossed the plate on a wild pitch to extend CWRU's lead to 4-2.

Emory scored a two-out run in the bottom of the fifth to get back within a run, 4-3, but sophomore reliever Matthew DuBois got a lineout to end the inning, leaving the tying and go-ahead runners stranded in scoring position. CWRU broke the game open with a seven-run top of the seventh, taking a 11-3 lead behind RBI hits from junior first baseman Nick Talarico, junior third baseman Owen Levinson, Mackenzie and junior second baseman Trey Haley, along with a bases-loaded walk issued to Anderson and a sacrifice fly by Carinci.

CWRU extended its lead further with an RBI single by Mackenzie in the top of the eighth, going ahead 12-3.

DuBois earned the win in the game, the first decision of his collegiate career. Carinci, who took the mound with one out and the potential tying run on second in the sixth, held Emory scoreless over the final three and two thirds innings, allowing just two hits and a walk and striking out a pair to pick up his third save of the season. In the no-decision, Bouma scattered nine hits and two walks, while allowing just three runs in an effective outing.

The Spartans will return to Cleveland to begin a stretch of 16 of their next 18 games at home, starting with a four-game UAA series against Brandeis University at Nobby's Ballpark. CWRU will open its weekend with the Judges on Friday, April 1 at 3:00 p.m.
