Box Score The Case Western Reserve University baseball team fell 7-4 to Emory University on Friday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta, Georgia in the team's first University Athletic Association game of the season.
The Spartans fall to 6-10 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Eagles improve to 14-8 overall and 1-0 in the UAA.
Case Western Reserve struck first in the second inning, when junior first baseman Nick Talarico scored on a throwing error. Talarico walked to lead off the inning, advancing to second on a single from junior second baseman Trey Haley, and scored via two Emory errors. Later in the inning, Haley was thrown out at home when trying to score on an infield grounder.
The Eagles responded in the bottom of third, tying the game with a run-scoring groundout. Talarico drove in the Spartans second run of the game with a bases-loaded groundout in the fifth inning, scoring sophomore third baseman Zack Carinci.
Emory scored four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead. CWRU rallied in the ninth inning, scoring two runs to cut into the deficit. Graduate student shortstop Jacob Lott scored on a wild pitch, and first-year outfielder Logan Andreyko drove in Carinci with a sacrifice fly. Talarico doubled to put the tying run in the on-deck circle, but he was stranded there as the Eagles closed out the game.
Six different Spartans recorded hits in the contest, with Carinci and Talarico slugging doubles. Sophomore pitcher Reece Marley (2-2) took the loss, pitching five innings while giving up two earned runs on just four hits and adding five strikeouts. Kyle Sulkowski (3-1) picked up the win in relief.
The teams will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
