Case Western Reserve University senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru nearly pulled off a monumental upset at the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego, California, but ultimately suffered a tiebreaker loss in the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday night.
The match proved to be a strong showing for the Spartans, who were matched against one of the top teams in the tournament after earning a wild card berth into the event as a result of winning the Division III doubles draw at the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia in October.
Hopper and Aduru, the only non-Division I pairing in the tournament, pushed third-seeded Alexander Jong and Lui Maxted of Texas Christian University to the limit on Wednesday. After dropping the first set 6-3, Hopper and Aduru battled back to win the second set 6-3. The third set was played close, but the duo from TCU pulled out a 10-8 win to advance in the tournament.
Hopper and Aduru will now move to the consolation draw, where they will face unseeded Younes Lalami and Brandon Perez of Old Dominion University on Thursday at 10:00 p.m. ET. Fans can follow the match with live video and results.
