The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team won its first dual match of the 2022-23 season, defeating Ohio Wesleyan University 39-8 at the Veale Center in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday night.
The Spartans improved to 1-0 in duals while the Battling Bishops fell to 0-1.
Four CWRU wrestlers earned wins by fall in the match, including first-years Ari Kefer, Art Martinez, Marty Landes, and John Conover. Kefer defeated Chase Wolfingbarger at 125 pounds in 1:34, Martinez took down Jimmy Baumann at 141 pounds in 5:10, Landes pinned Tim Alexander in 3:52 at 157 pounds, and Conover bested Christian Tesnow in 5:33 at 165 pounds. Each of the four wrestlers picked up six team points for Case Western Reserve in the dual meet. Kefer and Martinez earned their second pins of the season, while Landes and Conover picked up their first collegiate pins.
At 133 pounds, first-year Jacob Gregg defeated Donovan Ortiz by decision 13-7, and at 149 pounds, first-year Calvin Rowan bested Luke Milanovich in a 5-2 decision. First-year Zachary Lyon added six points to the team total with a win by forfeit at 184 pounds, and senior Stephen Andryc finished the team scoring with a 3-2 win by decision over Geoffry Kaminsky at 197 pounds.
The Spartans will host the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Intercollegiate Open on Sunday inside the Veale Center. Action will begin at 10 a.m.
