Men's Swimming and Diving

Swimming & Diving Opens Season with Big Wins over OWU

Both Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving teams defeated Ohio Wesleyan University in a season-opening dual meet on Saturday at Veale Natatorium in Cleveland, Ohio, with the 18th-ranked women's team winning 207-56 and the 25th-ranked men's team prevailing 203-66. Spartan swimmers and divers finished first in all 32 events.

CWRU teams improved to 1-0 in dual meets, while both Battling Bishop teams fell to 0-1 on the season.

Sophomore swimmer Gabriella Chambers took first place in three events, two individually and one as a member of a relay. Chambers teamed with sophomore swimmers Erica RiceCaroline Schlessman, and Kate Menzer to win the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:50.50. Chambers was also the first finisher in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.20 and the 100 Free with a time of 54.51 seconds.

A pair of Spartans—first-year swimmer Megha Siddapureddy and sophomore diver Jocelyn Schechter—earned two first place finishes. Swimming in her first collegiate meet, Siddapureddy won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:15.72 and the 100 Fly in 1:00.03. Schechter swept the diving events, recording a score of 218.90 in the 1-meter dive and 236.05 in the 3-meter dive.

Other top finishers for the Spartans included first-year swimmer Claire Kozma (50 Free, 24.56 seconds), sophomore swimmer Angeli Paull (500 Free, 5:27.63), first-year swimmer Hannah Shih (1,000 Free, 11:03.74), sophomore swimmer Amelia Myhrvold (100-yard backstroke, 59.63 seconds), sophomore swimmer Elishka Bailey (200 Back, 2:09.97), sophomore swimmer Madison McDaniels (100-yard breaststroke, 1:09.64), sophomore swimmer Ally Solomon (200 Breast, 2:33.36), and senior swimmer Maria Pritchett (200 IM, 2:13.47).

The 200 Free Relay of first-year swimmers Kailyn Smith and Lauren Valentine and sophomore swimmers Erin Quinlan and Adriana Kamor finished the meet with a win in 1:44.25.

For the men's team, four Spartans placed first on a relay and in an individual event. First-year swimmer William Froass took first in the 100 Back with a time of 52.50 seconds and teamed with first-year swimmers Julian KimJohn Drumm, and Emil LaSida to win the 200 Medley Relay. Additionally, Kim finished first in the 100 Breast in 58.56 seconds. The 200 Free Relay of LaSida, first-year swimmer Mason Bencurik, sophomore swimmer Peter Meng, and senior swimmer Campbell Patterson placed first in 1:25.99. Earlier in the meet, Meng was the fastest swimmer in the 200 Breast, finishing in 2:08.55, and Patterson won the 100 Free in 47.39 seconds.

Additionally, sophomore diver Alex Waltman swept the diving events with scores of 207.55 in the 1-meter dive and 244.75 in the 3-meter dive.

Eight additional CWRU swimmers were fastest in their events. They included first-year swimmer Ben Borvendeg (50 Free, 21.28 seconds), sophomore swimmer Stephen Hogeman (200 Free, 1:46.51), sophomore swimmer Michael Butler (500 Free, 4:53.40), first-year swimmer Ian Ridlehoover (1,000 Free, 10:19.99), sophomore swimmer Cole Davin (100 Fly, 53.50 seconds), sophomore swimmer Anthony Colangelo (200 Fly, 1:59.93), sophomore swimmer Jace Creech (200 Back, 1:58.14), and junior swimmer Ethan Chuang (200 IM, 1:58.30).

The Spartans will travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next Saturday to face Carnegie Mellon in a dual meet. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
