Case Western Reserve University junior Andrew Smith broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley during the first day of competition at the Magnus Cup Invitational, as the men sit in third place and the women are in eighth place at the meet.
The Spartan men totaled 272 points, while Cleveland State is in first with 554 points and Xavier University is in second with 333 points. The women totaled 63 points on the first day of competition. Akron is in first on the women's side with 484.5 points.
Smith set the school record in the 200-yard individual medley during the preliminaries as he notched a time of 1:52.35. That bests the previous school record of 1:53.31 set back in 2020 by former Spartan Will McDonald. He was one of five Spartans to qualify for the 'A' and 'B' final of the event, along with first-year Jasha Heide (seventh, 1:52.65), sophomore Ethan Chuang (eighth, 1:52.72), sophomore Ben Zuo (18th, 1:56.40 in the prelims) and junior Patrick Cavanaugh (20th, 1:55.77 in the prelims).
The Spartan men were also strong in the 500-yard freestyle and the 50-yard freestyle. In the 500 Free, the men had three 'A' final finishes and two 'B' final finishes. The 'A' final finishers were first-year Stephen Hogeman (seventh, 4:36.38), first-year Peter Meng (eighth, 4:36.68) and junior Xander Guerrero (10th, 4:40.26 in the prelims), while the 'B' final finishers were first-year Michael Butler (13th, 4:40.98) and junior Justin Christensen (20th, 4:45.57 in the prelims).
In the 50 Free, junior Campbell Patterson led the Spartan men with a 10thplace finish (21.13 in the prelims, while 'B' final finishers were first-year Jackson Pollard (14th, 21.37), senior Calvin Tecson (15th, 21.19 in the prelims), senior Ryan Gilbert (17th, 21.59 in the prelims) and first-year Cole Davin (18th, 21.74 in the prelims).
In addition, the men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Patterson, Pollard, Tecson and junior Anatole Borisov placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:24.43, while the men's 400-yard medley relay team of Meng, Borisov, first-year Jiro Batt and senior Michael Clough finished eighth in the event with a time of 3:25.45.
For the women, junior Abby Halsdorfer earned an 18th-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.32. Junior Maria Pritchett added a 27th place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.44 in the prelims), while first-year Simone Vale placed 27th in the 50-yard freestyle (24.30 in the prelims).
In addition, the women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Vale, first-year Gabriella Chambers, first-year Nara Lee and first-year Angeli Paull placed 15th in the event with a time of 1:37.34, while the women's 400-yard medley relay team of Vale, Chambers, first-year Madison McDaniels and first-year Kate Menzer finished 16th in the event with a time of 3:54.61.
Action at the meet will resume on Friday at the Busbey Natatorium on the Cleveland State University campus, with the preliminaries starting at 9:00 a.m., and finals slated to follow at 5:00 p.m. In addition, the CWRU men and women divers will start competition at the CMU Diving Invitational tomorrow. Action is expected to start at 4:00 p.m.
