Case Western Reserve University junior James Hopper closed out his sweep of the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Central Regional Championships on Tuesday, claiming a straight-set win over first-year teammate Ansh Shah in the title match at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland, Ohio.
Hopper, seeded first overall in the draw, bested fifth-seeded Shah 6-2, 6-0 to claim the title. After taking a 4-2 lead in the opening set, Hopper won the next eight sets in a row to claim the victory. It marked back-to-back regional singles titles for Hopper, who became the first Spartan to ever win the singles draw at the event in 2019.
By virtue of winning the singles draw, Hopper will claim All-America status for his play at singles for the third-straight season. In addition, both Hopper and Shah earned a spot in the singles draw for the ITA Cup from October 14-16 in Rome, Georgia.
Joining Hopper and Shah in Rome will be graduate student Jonathan Powell, who teamed with Hopper to win the doubles draw at the ITA Regionals last weekend.
More information on the ITA Cup will be posted to athletics.case.edu in the week leading up to play.
