Case Western Reserve University junior James Hopper and graduate student Jonathan Powell claimed the doubles title at the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Central Region Championships on Sunday morning. In addition, Hopper and first-year Ansh Shah each won their singles semifinal matches on Sunday, and will now face each other in the singles draw championship match back at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
Hopper and Powell, the top-seeded pairing in the doubles draw, defeated second-seeded Abhi Ramireddy and Daniel Li of Washington University (Mo.) in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (6) in the championship match to claim the region title. It marked the second ITA Fall Regional Doubles Championship in program history, following Hopper's win with Matthew Chen when the tournament was last played in 2019.
By virtue of winning the doubles draw, Hopper and Powell will each claim All-America honors for the 2021-22 year. For Hopper, it will be the third time in his career he has received All-America honors for his play at doubles, while Powell will be securing All-America acclaim for the first time in his collegiate career. In addition, the duo secured a berth into the ITA Cup later this month by reaching the finals of the doubles draw.
In singles play, Shah, seeded fifth, secured an upset win in the semifinals over the second seed, Tim Cianciola of Denison, 6-0, 6-2, while Hopper, seeded first, defeated teammate and ninth seed Vishwa Aduru, 6-1, 6-3 in his semifinal match. Both Shah and Hopper earned a berth into the ITA Cup field by virtue of reaching the championship match of the draw, while the winner of Tuesday's contest will earn All-America honors for the campaign.
Powell also wrapped up a win of the consolation draw on Sunday, winning the championship match 6-2, 6-1 over Augustana's Arthur Hermange.
