Case Western Reserve University first-year Ansh Shah secured the first All-America honor of his career on Thursday afternoon, winning a round of 16 singles match at the 2021 ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
Shah, who finished as the runner-up in the ITA Fall Central Regional Singles Tournament to junior teammate James Hopper, joins Hopper and graduate student Jonathan Powell as All-Americans this season for CWRU. It marks the first time in program history that three different Spartan players have earned all-America honors in the same season.
Shah bested John Rado of Skidmore in the opening round, coming back from a 6-2 setback in the first set to win the next two, 6-2, 6-3. However, Shah's main draw run would come to an end in the quarterfinals, where he suffered a 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 loss to third-seeded Chase Cohen of Williams.
Hopper, the top-seeded singles player in the draw, also reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over RPI's Yudai Teruyama in the opening round. CWRU was the only program in the draw to have two players in the quarterfinals. However, battling injury and illness throughout the day, Hopper was forced to retire from his quarterfinal match with North Carolina Wesleyan's Jhonny Acosta, after winning the first set 7-5 and losing the second 6-4.
Hopper attempted to rally for his doubles match with Powell later in the day, but the second-seeded duo fell to Trinity's Christian Settles and Hao Nguyen 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 16.
Action at the ITA Cup will continue on Friday in the consolation draws for the Spartans. Hopper is due to face fourth-seeded Robert Liu, while Shah will take on Moses Hutchison of Mary Washington, both at 9:00 a.m. Hopper and Powell will face Sam Dean and Santiago Suarez of Emory at 4:00 p.m., followed by a second doubles match later in the day.
