Three Spartans Singles Players & Both Doubles Teams Advance at ITAs

Case Western Reserve University men's tennis players went a combined 4-0 in doubles play and 7-1 in singles action during the first day of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Central Region Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan, as three Spartans reached the round of 16 of the singles draw, and both pairings qualified for the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.

In doubles play, the Spartans' duo of junior James Hopper and graduate student Jonathan Powell, seeded first in the draw, picked up a pair of wins on Friday to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal match. In the opening round of 32, Hopper and Powell earned an 8-2 win over Jacob Burkett and Matt Henkel of Hope, before claiming an 8-0 victory against Arthur Hermange and Leonardo Panosso of Augustana in the round of 16. On the other side of the doubles draw, CWRU's fifth-seeded duo of sophomore Vishwa Aduru and first-year Ansh Shah topped North Central's Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Javier Suarez Balsera 8-6 in the first round, followed by an 8-0 win over Elmhurst's Tomas Bella and Justin Penados in the round of 16.

Hopper and Powell will take on Chicago's fifth-seeded duo of Sachin Das and Arjun Asokumar in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., with the winning pairing advancing to the semifinals at 9:30 a.m. against the winner of the contest between Denison's fifth-seeded pairing of Timmy Cianciola and Andy Mackler and Principia's Daniel Gomez and Juan Segovia. Also at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aduru and Shah will face the second-seeded duo of Daniel Li and Abhi Ramireddy from Washington University, with the winning pairing advancing to the semifinals at 9:30 a.m. against the winner of the contest between fourth-seeded Derek Hsieh and Christian Alshon of Chicago and fifth-seeded Ian Yi and Peter Fitzgerald of Kalamazoo.

During the first day of singles competition, Hopper, the top seed, was flawless in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Segovia in his first round match, and claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Denison's Marc Lennart Harms in the round of 32. He will face ninth-seeded Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk of Lake Forest in the round of 16 at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the match between Kalamazoo's fifth-seeded Ian Yi and Kenyon's Rishil Kondapenini.

Aduru, the ninth seed, also picked up a pair of wins on Friday, besting Adrian's Brandon Falk 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 64 and Elmhurst's Tomas Bella 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 32. Next up for Aduru will be third-seeded Luis Andres Platas in the round of 16, with the winner facing the victor between fifth-seeded Abhi Ramireddy of Washington and ninth-seeded Christian Alshon of Chicago in the quarterfinals.

Shah also reached the round of 16 with wins over Illinois Wesleyan's Demetrios Triantafel (6-0, 6-1) in the round of 64 and Denison's Andy Mackler (6-1, 5-7, 10-3) in the round of 32. He will take on Chicago's Arjun Asokumar (seeded ninth) in the round of 16, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals to face either Washington's ninth-seeded Gaurav Singh or Principia's fourth-seeded Daniel Gomez.

The Spartans' lone setback on the day came from Powell in the first round of singles, where he suffered a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 13-11 loss to Washington's Daniel Li, the ninth seed. However, Powell bounced back with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ohio Northern's Peyton Specht, and will face Panosso in his next match on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Singles round of 16 matches will be played at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the quarterfinals matches at 2:30 p.m.
