Pritchett & Women's Relay Teams Notch NCAA 'B' Cuts on Second Day of UAA Championships

Case Western Reserve University first-year Maria Pritchett placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley with a NCAA 'B' cut time, while the women's 200-yard freestyle relay team placed sixth and the women's 400-yard medley relay placed fifth with a NCAA 'B' cut times to highlight the second day of competition at the 2020 University Athletic Association Championships on Thursday, hosted by the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

Pritchett placed sixth in the 'A' final of the women's 200-yard individual medley with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:06.17. During the preliminaries of the event, Pritchett set a new school record with a time of 2:05.87. That time bests her previous school record of 2:07.21 set at 2019 Wooster Invitational in December. Sophomore Kelly Moton added a 21st place finish in the event with a time of 2:09.54, while senior Julia Ver Voort finished 24th with a time of 2:14.45.

Pritchett also teamed with junior Caitlyn VonFeldt, sophomore Daniella Rupert and sophomore Sarah Krueger in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish sixth with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:35.59. The women's 400-yard medley relay team of VonFeldt, Moton, Krueger and sophomore Anna Smith placed fifth in the event with a 'B' cut time of 3:51.25.

Individually for the women, first-year Abby Halsdorfer added a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.02, while Rupert placed 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.50.  

For the men, sophomore Calvin Tecson finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.79. During the preliminaries of the event, Tecson set a new school record with a time of 20.76, which breaks his previous school record of 20.77 set at the 2019 Wooster Invite.

Junior Will McDonald placed 18th in the 200-yard individual medley with a new school record time of 1:53.51. That time bests the previous school record of 1:53.73 set by former Spartan Drew Hamilton in 2017. Junior Kyle Barclay added a 20th place finish in the event with a time of 1:53.93, while first-year Patrick Cavanaugh finished 22nd with a time of 1:55.43.

Tecson also teamed with sophomore Ryan Gilbert, first-year Will Bryant and first-year Anatole Borisov in the 200-yard freestyle relay to place sixth in the event with a time of 1:22.95. The men's 400-yard medley relay team of Tecson, Borisov, Cavanaugh and sophomore Nicholas Schoenig added a sixth place finish with a time of 3:24.66.

In addition, McDonald also set a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke as he was leading off the men's 'B' final of the 400-yard medley relay. He notched a time of 51.12, which breaks his previous school record of 51.22 set last year at the UAA Championships.

After two days of competition for the women, the Spartans sat in sixth place in the team standings. The Case Western Reserve University men were sixth after one day of action at the conference championships.

Action at the UAA Championships will resume on Friday, with the preliminaries scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. Events to be contested during the third day of the championships included the women's three-meter dive, the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
