Senior Suhan Mestha of the Case Western Reserve University women's swimming and diving team claimed an individual All-America honorable mention certificate at the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships, as the Spartans capped off an outstanding 2018-19 campaign with a 46th-place finish in the nation.
Mestha recorded the individual All-America honorable mention finish at the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, as she finished 14th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.62. Case Western Reserve totaled three points at the meet, leading to the 46th-place finish.
The Spartans' success at the NCAA Championships, followed a number of standout performances at the 2019 University Athletic Association Championships in Chicago, Illinois. Mestha earned All-UAA honors with third-place finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke (56.81) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.19), and qualified for five NCAA Division III 'B' cut times. The Spartans totaled 697 points during the UAA Championships to finish sixth at the annual conference meet.
In addition to the Spartans' success at the UAA Championships, a small squad of CWRU swimmers competed at the two-day Midwest Invitational the following weekend in Chicago, Illinois. Two school records were broken during the meet by the women, as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Mestha, senior Renee Decker, sophomore Caitlyn VonFeldt and freshman Daniella Rupert finished first in the event with a new school record and NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:34.95. Mestha and VonFeldt also teamed with senior Alexa Simoneau and freshman Anna Smith in the 400-yard medley relay to finish first in the event with a school record and 'B' cut time of 3:50.41.
In December, the Spartans finished first out of 11 teams at the Wooster Invitational for the fourth-straight season, totaling 2,163 points to clear the second-place squad by more than 900 points. Case Western Reserve won nine events during the meet, with Mestha claiming first-place in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, VonFeldt won the 200-yard backstroke, junior Olivia Picchione winning the 200-yard butterfly, Smith winning the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard medley relay of Mestha, VonFeldt, Smith and senior Alli Drohosky claiming the title in the event, the 800-yard freestyle relay of Olivia Picchione, Drohosky, Rupert and freshman Sarah Krueger earning first in the event and the 400-yard freestyle relay of Mestha, VonFeldt, Rupert and Krueger claiming the title in the event.
The Spartans finished the 2018-19 season with a 9-2 dual meet record, including four consecutive wins to end the season.
In addition to their work in the pool, the Spartans were recognized as a team for their academic achievements, as the team received Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) with a team grade point average of 3.64 during the fall semester. Nineteen members of the Case Western Reserve women's swimming and diving team – junior Adi Alkalay, senior Sydney Anderson, senior Vera Bostwick, Decker, Drohosky, sophomore Caroline Dudenhoeffer, senior Kelsey Holmberg, senior Lauren Homack, sophomore Olivia Love, Mestha, Olivia Picchione, junior Sienna Picchione, junior Rhiannon Reese, junior Corri Sept, Simoneau, junior Sarah Taekman, sophomore Sophia Vaccaro, junior Elizabeth Ye and senior Karine Zeidan – received UAA Winter All-Academic recognition.
