The Case Western Reserve University women's swimming and diving team turned in a successful 2016-17 campaign, going 8-2 in dual meets, winning the Wooster Invitational, and finishing second at the Midwest Invitational to conclude the season.
The Spartan women found success at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships, hosted by the University of Chicago, with the 400-yard medley relay team of junior Jennifer Eurich and sophomores Bhavya Kumaran, Alli Drohosky and Casey Crowley setting a season-best time of 3:59.55 in the event. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Selena Mufti, sophomore Renee Decker and freshmen Aleah Hixenbaugh and Olivia Picchione also set a season-best mark in the event with a time of 7:57.82.
Crowley also finished 13th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.42 and 11th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.76, while freshman Sarah Taekman placed 10th in 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:25.90 and 15th in both the 400-yard individual medley (4:41.14) and in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.33). The Spartan women totaled 552.5 points over the four-day meet, finishing seventh at the conference championships.
Earlier in the year, Case Western Reserve won the Wooster Invitational in December, marking the second time the Spartans have won the event. The Spartans totaled 1,846.5 points to finish ahead of the other 10 teams, and outscored second-place Edinboro by over 500 points. Spartan swimmers notched 11 individual top-three finishes at the meet, with Eurich claiming third in the 50-yard freestyle and in the 100-yard freestyle, Crowley finishing third in the 200-yard butterfly, Kumaran placing third in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke, Taekman claiming third in the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Kelsey Holmberg finishing third in the 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman Julia Ver Voort placing third in the 400-yard IM, freshman Elizabeth Ye claiming second in the 200-yard breaststroke and junior Brooke Hortness finishing second in the three-meter dive and third in the one-meter dive.
The Spartans turned in a solid dual meet campaign, winning eight of their 10 meets during the campaign, including a 3-1 record at home during the year. The Spartans racked up wins against John Carroll, Wooster, Oberlin, Grove City, Gannon, Ohio Northern, Hillsdale and Baldwin Wallace during the year. The team's only two losses during the season came to Carnegie Mellon and Rochester, both highly ranked Division III programs.
Spartan swimmers to record top-10 times in school history included Eurich in 100 Free (53.41, seventh-best in CWRU history), junior Inez Moore in the 100 Free (10th-best in CWRU history), Holmberg in the 1,650 Free (18:07.87, seventh-best in CWRU history), sophomore Ashley Schuett in the 100 Back (1:01.18, ninth-best in CWRU history), Taekman in the 100 Breast (1:07.55, fifth-best in CWRU history), 200 Breast (2:25.90, third-best in CWRU history) and 400 IM (4:40.71, eighth-best in CWRU history), sophomore Alexa Simoneau in the 100 Breast (1:08.46, eighth-best in CWRU history) and 200 Breast (2:28.29, ninth-best in CWRU history), Ye in the 200 Breast (2:27.05, sixth-best in CWRU history), Crowley in the 100 Fly (58.42, fourth-best in CWRU history) and 200 Fly (2:09.76, sixth-best in CWRU history), freshman Monica Khare in the 100 Fly (59.22, fifth-best in CWRU history), freshman Becca Segel in the 200 Fly (2:13.05, 10th-best in CWRU history), Ver Voort in the 200 IM (2:10.92, fifth-best in CWRU history) and 400 IM (4:42.85, 10th-best in CWRU history) and Mufti in the 400 IM (4:39.46, seventh-best in CWRU history). Hortness was the team's top diver, recording scores of 348.95 in the one-meter dive (11 dives) and 344.00 in the three-meter dive (11 dives) at the 2017 UAA Championships.
In addition to their success in the pool, the Spartans were recognized by the CSCAA as a Scholar All-America Team, based on their team grade point average of 3.58 during the spring semester. Seventeen members of the women's swimming and diving team – Sydney Anderson, Vera Bostwick, Decker, Abigail Dessart, Drohosky, Eurich, Madeleine Farnham, Kaitlyn Gorski, Holmberg, Lauren Homack, Hortness, Taylor Johnson, Noora Khiraoui, Mufti, Schuett, Simoneau and Karine Zeidan – received UAA Winter All-Academic recognition during the 2016-17 campaign.
