Hamilton Notches NCAA 'B' Cut at UAA Championships on Thursday

Case Western Reserve University junior Drew Hamilton recorded an NCAA Division III 'B' cut time to highlight the second day of competition at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships on Thursday, hosted by the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

Hamilton recorded the 'B' cut time of 4:31.78 in the 500-yard freestyle en route to placing fifth in the event. Three other Spartans gathered points in the event with sophomore Keith Erichsen (14th, 4:38.97), senior David Merriman (17th, 4:40.78) and sophomore Brody Schmidt (20th, 4:41.47).

One school record fell for the Spartan men during the meet on Thursday. The Spartans 400-yard medley relay team of junior Oliver Hudgins, freshman Mason Beck, freshman John Libert and Hamilton placed fifth with a time 3:25.47. Hudgins' 100-yard backstroke time in the relay broke the program record in the event with a time of 51.40, besting the previous record of 51.47 set back in 2014.

Hudgins, Hamilton, Schmidt and senior Andrew Henning teamed up in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish sixth with a time of 1:24.50. Hudgins also added a 14th place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.33.

For the women, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Jennifer Eurich, sophomore Bhavya Kumaran, sophomore Lauren Homack and junior Inez Moore placed seventh with a time of 1:38.75. Kumaran and Eurich also teamed with sophomores Alli Drohosky and Casey Crowley to finish seventh in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:59.55.

Individually for the women, freshman Julia Ver Voort placed 21st in the 200-yard individual medley, while junior Brooke Hortness finished 13th in the three-meter dive with a score of 344.00 in the preliminaries.

After two days of competition for the men, the Spartans sat in sixth place in the team standings. The Case Western Reserve University women were seventh after one day of action at the conference championships.

Action at the UAA Championships will resume on Friday, with preliminaries scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. Events to be contested during the third day of the championships include the men's three-meter dive, the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
