Spartan Swimming & Diving Rolls to Wins over Oberlin

The Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving teams each picked up victories in their second home meet of the 2017-18 season, with the men defeating Oberlin College 199-70, and the women claiming a 189-85 victory.

Both Spartan squads raised their season ledger to 3-1, while the Oberlin men dropped to 0-3 and the women fell to 1-3.

Freshman Sophia Vaccaro won two individual events for CWRU on Saturday, claiming victories in the 1.650-yard freestyle (18:37.95) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.64). The 200-yard medley relay team of senior Jennifer Eurich, junior Suhan Mestha, junior Alli Drohosky and sophomore Monica Khare to win the event with a time of 1:51.63.

Mestha also claimed a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.66, while Drohosky earned the win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.64. Other individual victories for the Spartan women were sophomore Olivia Picchione in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.57), freshman Caitlyn VonFeldt in the 100-yard backstroke (58.99), junior Casey Crowley in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.00), junior Alexa Simoneau in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.99) and sophomore Monica Khare in the 100-yard butterfly (59.96).

Senior Brooke Hortness also added a win in the one-meter dive with a score of 196.28.

Freshman Cassiel Yuzik added a win in the men's one-meter diving event, recording a score of 211.58.

Senior Oliver Hudgins paced the Spartan men on Saturday with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (21.82) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.24), and senior Drew Hamilton added win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.00. Hudgins and Hamilton also teamed with senior Aaron Pang and senior John Kilbane in the 200-yard medley relay to win the event in a time of 1:39.13.

Junior Keith Erichsen added a win in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:51.30), while freshman Will McDonald claimed a win in the 100-yard backstroke (55.27). Also claiming victories on Saturday for the CWRU men were freshman Jakob Woerner in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.34), senior John Tomko in the 100-yard freestyle (49.34), freshman Sean Twomey in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.63), junior Brody Schmidt in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.86) and senior Dominic Kizek in the 100-yard butterfly (53.54).

CWRU will be off from competition next weekend, before hosting Gannon University, Grove City College and the University of Rochester for a quad meet on Friday, November 17th and Saturday, November 18th. Diving events will take place on Friday, while swimming events will take place on Saturday.
