Box Score SANFORD, Fla. - Senior catcher Jordan Swisher (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) went 5-for-5 with a double, home run, and four runs batted in to lead the Spartans' 16-hit offensive output, but it wasn't enough as the Case Western Reserve baseball team fell to Brandeis, 12-8, in its final game at the University Athletic Association Baseball Championship.
Senior third baseman Kerrigan Cain (Hartville, OH/Archbishop Hoban) finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and one run batted in. Sophomore centerfielder Antonio Damiano (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) added a pair of hits, including a double, and senior designated hitter Andrew Gronski (Hilliard, OH/Hillaird Davidson) contributed two hits and one RBI.
Senior pitcher Dan Sondag (Cary, NC/Green Hope) struck out six in three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief for the Spartans. Junior Neal Krentz (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Lahser), in his first outing since throwing the first no-hitter in UAA history, threw a hitless eighth inning before yielding his first hit of the tournament with one out in the ninth.
Back-to-back singles and a throwing error led to two unearned runs for the Judges in the top of the second inning.
The Spartans got one back in the bottom half of the second inning, loading the bases with one out. Kerrigan Cain singled, and Gronski and freshman shortstop Danny Souza (Hollister, CA/Palma) followed with walks. Damiano singled in Cain.
Two errors and five singles highlighted a five-run Brandeis inning that stretched the lead to 8-1. Four walks and another error brought in three more Judges' runs in the fourth inning and made it 11-1.
Swisher's two-out single scored Gronski and sophomore rightfielder Aaron Cain (Hartville, OH/Archbishop Hoban) cut the deficit to eight runs, 11-3.
In the fifth inning, sophomore leftfielder Josh Neal (Gaithersburg, MD/St. John's College) singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Kerrigan Cain to make it 11-4. Neal also made a spectacular play on a foul ball to end the top of the sixth inning.
CWRU added another run in the sixth inning as Swisher doubled in Damiano, who doubled and stole third base.
Swisher led off the ninth inning with a home run that sparked a three-run rally. Freshman second baseman Alex Capetillo (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) and Neal both walked. Capetillo scored on an error and Gronski singled home Neal. A walk to Aaron Cain loaded the bases, but the Spartans left the final three of their 13 total stranded baserunners.
