CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming programs were both winners on Saturday, January 8, edging Notre Dame College in a dual meet in the Veale Natatorium. Freshman diver Dan Jacobson (Solon, OH/Solon) took first on both boards as the men's team earned a 123.5-99.5 decision. Another rookie, Maggie Dillione (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North), paced the women with two wins in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle as the women's squad won 108-88.
On the men's side, the Spartans claimed eight individual wins and another victory in the relays to move to 5-0 on the season in dual meet competition.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore Chris Emr (Rockville, MD/Thomas Sprigg Wootton) and freshman Tyler Piedimonte (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) finished in the top two spots for Case. Emr turned in a winning time of 10:09.50, while Piedimonte touched behind in 10:16.84.
Freshman Scott McHenry (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) was a runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle event, notching a time of 1:47.25.
In the 50 free, freshman Gus Bailey (Grove City, OH/Grove City) took first in 21.56 as another rookie, Sean Corcoran (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), placed second with a time of 22.91.
Freshman Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) and senior Robby Browning (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Pointe South) also went first and second in the 200 yard IM, with Clyde recording a winning time of 2:03.17. Browning, who also won the 100 yard backstroke event in 53.18, touched the wall right behind in 2:05.16.
Another freshman took first for the Spartans in the 100-yard butterfly, with Sean Nickley (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) winning in 53.64. Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) was a winner in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.61.
Junior Sam Geiger (Westlake, OH/St. Edward) was a second-place finisher in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.55.
Jacobson, who is already an NCAA provisional qualifier, won the one-meter dive event, edging his closest competitor 271.40-210.40. In the three meter, Jacobson put up a score of 281.30 to win by 91.3 points.
Case's 'A' foursome also took first in the 200-yard medley relay to score for the Spartans.
The women produced a 20-point victory on the strength of eight individual wins and another first-place result in the relays and improved to 3-2 for the 2010-11 season.
Freshman Sara Tillie (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and senior Kelsey Zeller (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Tillie, who also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:21.92, took the event in 11:22.67 as Zeller touched close behind in 11:25.44.
Dillione, a winner in the 200 free with her time of 1:56.52, was followed by junior Stephanie Campbell (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) in second place with a time of 2:01.18. The pair also ran first and second in the 100-yard butterfly, with Dillione finishing in 59.84 and Campbell turning in a time of 1:02.61.
Senior Roxanne Leyshon (Cambridge, OH/Mercersburg Academy) led the way with a 25.18, first-place result in the 50-yard freestyle, while freshman Catie Gormley (North Royalton, OH/North Royalton) pulled in second at 25.56.
Senior Emma Call (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) scored a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:20.90.
In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Jessica Nuhfer (Warren, PA/Warren Area) was a winner in a time of 55.64. Ellen Crummy took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.68.
In the relays, Case's 200-yard medley relay 'A' and 'B' teams went one-two to highlight the afternoon.
Next up for the Spartans will be a dual match at local rival Baldwin-Wallace College on Friday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m.
