ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving teams kicked off their 2010-11 season this weekend at the University of Rochester tri-meet, competing with the host team and New York University. The Spartan men won three individual events and two relays and defeated both NYU (205-154) and UR (244-116), while the women's team had four solo winners and one relay champ splitting a win versus UR (179.5-174.5) and a loss against NYU (179.5-171.5) at the two-day event.
Case was a winner in the 800 yard freestyle relay as freshman William Hudgins (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill), junior Michael Lin (Raritan, NJ), freshman Scott McHenry (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) and junior Sam Geiger (Westlake, OH/St. Edward) combined for a time of 7:21.59 to outpace Case's 'B' squad by just under three seconds.
The men also took the top two spots in the 200 yard freestyle. Lin placed first overall with a time of 1:47.35, while Hudgins narrowly took second in 1:48.63.
Senior Robby Browning (Grosse Pointe, MI) had a fantastic meet, taking first in the 100 yard backstroke with a winning result of 53.60 and also finishing second in the 100 yard butterfly (54.04) and third in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:01.14
Freshman Gus Bailey (Grove City, OH/Grove City), Lin and Hudgins also swept the 50-yard freestyle event on Saturday. Bailey was the winner in a time of 21.86, while Lin and Hudgins followed with times of 22.53 and 22.58, respectively.
On the women's side, Case had two of the top three in the 400 yard medley relay as the 'A' foursome of junior Stephanie Campbell (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield), senior Roxanne Leyshon (Cambridge, OH/Mercersburg Academy), freshman Maggie Dillione (Newton, PA/Council Rock North) and freshman Sara Tillie (Fallston, MD/Fallston) turned in a time of 4:06.68 to take first in the event by nearly five seconds.
Dillione was also a winner in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly, hitting the wall nearly eight full seconds ahead of the next swimmer in the 200 to take first in a time of 2:11.78. Her time of 59.71 in the 100 earned her a win by a shade over three seconds.
The 100 yard breaststroke was also all Case, as senior Jacquie Buckler (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) took the top spot in 1:10.33 as Case swept the top three places in the event. Buckler also won the 200 yard breastroke in a time of 2:33.44.
The Spartans will return to the swimming pool for the Veale Classic Duals, their first home competition of the season, on November 12-13. The competition will kick off Friday at 5 p.m. and will pick up again Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.
