Game Recap: Baseball |

Spartans Swept by UChicago in Saturday Doubleheader

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team dropped a pair of baseball games to the University of Chicago on Saturday at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, falling 5-1 in the first contest before suffering a 12-6 setback in the second game of the day.

The Spartans fell to 15-14 overall and to 4-7 in the University Athletic Association, while the Maroons improved to 13-13 with a 6-5 conference record.

Game 1 Recap: UChicago def. CWRU, 5-1

  • After both teams went scoreless through the first three innings, the Maroons scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 2-0.

  • UChicago starter Matthew Richert retired the first 12 batters he faced before a base hit from graduate student Eli Westrick to lead off the fifth broke up the perfect game.

  • CWRU rallied for a run with three-straight two-out hits in the bottom of the sixth, including a run-scoring single by junior shortstop Nate Arterburn to cut the Maroons' lead to a run, but the Spartans left the tying and go-ahead runners on the basepaths in the frame.

  • Harrison Belden hit a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the sixth, extending UChicago's lead to 5-1.

  • The Spartans loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, bringing the potential game-tying run to the plate, but a double play ended the CWRU threat and kept the Maroons' lead at four runs.

  • UChicago's Richert earned the win to improve to 2-0, while Corey Savedoff earned his first save of the campaign. CWRU junior starter Tyler Stillson suffered the loss to fall to 4-3, allowing four runs on 11 hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

Game 2 Recap: UChicago def. CWRU, 12-6

  • After UChicago scored a run in the top of the second, the Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from sophomore second baseman Calvin Gelle to tie the game.

  • The Maroons went on to score six runs in the top of the third to take a 7-1 lead.

  • CWRU scored five runs, all unearned and with two outs, in the bottom of the fifth to get back within a run. Senior outfielder Matt Trout began the scoring with a bases-loaded single that, combined with an error by the left fielder, allowed three runs to score. Trout later scored a run of his own on another UChicago error, and a bases-loaded walk issued to first-year first baseman Tucker Greer cut the lead to a run. However, the inning ended on a strikeout, as the Maroons held on to a 7-6 edge.

  • UChicago answered with a run in the top of the sixth to go ahead by two, and then broke the game open with four runs in the top of the ninth.

  • Mike Sosna earned the win for the Maroons, improving to 1-1 on the year, while CWRU senior Archer Stankowski suffered the loss, dropping to 3-1.

  • First-year outfielder Cole White had two of the Spartans' six hits in the game, along with a pair of stolen bases. Trout finished one-for-five with two runs and two RBIs. First-year third baseman James O'Connor doubled to lead off the game, the team's lone extra-base hit during the doubleheader.

Spartan Notes

  • The Spartans were eight-for-eight in stolen base attempts on Saturday and nine-for-nine in the series.

  • Stillson has reached base in each of his last 13 games, the longest active streak by a Spartan player and the third-longest on the team this season.

  • The Spartans stand at 84-40-1 in UAA games since the start of site play in 2017.

  • CWRU dropped to 22-19-1 all-time against UChicago.

  • This was CWRU's eighth true doubleheader of the season. CWRU has swept two, been swept twice, and split the other four.
